The Paphos District

Paphos is a destination rich on both history and myth. The Greek goddess Aphrodite is said to have been born here. In this area nature tends to reflect legend as the love and beauty associated to Aphrodite emanate from the location.

During ancient history, Paphos was the capital and hub of Cypriot affairs. The Visit of St. Paul to the Island also reflects the deeply historical nature of the area. The area is recognised the world over for its cultural and natural beauty and has been listed by UNESCO as a jewel of world heritage.

Paphos / Mesogi area

The property is ideally located for the many bars and restaurants in the scenic harbour district, whether you want a romatic meal, dance all night or keep the kids amused you will find all this within walking distance once your downtown in Kato Paphos which is just 10 minutes from the villa - in addition to all the tourist attractions. Kato Paphos still retains its charms and high standard for the local as well as tourist to enjoy together.

Paphos is known for it's culinary treats. You can choose form either Italian, Indian or Chinese etc. Saffron restaurant is definitely worth a visit and specialises in French cuisine. There is also an American themed restaurant called Fat Mamas which is popular with the younger visitors and also provides in entertainment.

Local Activities:

Tomb of the Kings

Spread over a vast area, these impressive underground tombs date back to the 4th Century BC. They are carved out of solid rock with some being decorated with Doric pillars. High officials rather than Kings were buried here, but the magnificence of the tombs gave the locality its name.

Churches

Churches and Basilicas – These make up a huge portion of the history of Paphos. Some of the ones which should not be missed including the Theoskepasti Church which is a typical example of a twentieth century religious building in Paphos. The Panayia Chrysopolitissa Church which highlights the Byzantine religious period and the Limeniotissa Basilica which dates all the way back to the fifth century.

The Ancient Odeon

The Odeon lies east of the light house, close to a rocky rise. Archaeologists have suggested it may be the site of the Acropolis. Most probably the Odeon was roofed, and was used for musical concerts and theatrical acts. It is not certain how many tiers of seats were in the Odeon. However it could accommodate a few thousand. It is believed the Odeon was most likely to have been destroyed by an earthquake.

Paphos Harbour

As Paphos was the capital during the Hellenistic-Roman time Harbour has experienced considerable activity. The harbour is well worth a visit to experience it's quaint shops, wide choice of restaurants and Tavernas serving traditional Greek fare are nestled around the waters edge. The harbour really comes alive at night; the Castle is illuminated and provides a lovely backdrop to this bustling area.

Catacomb of Saint Solomoni

The Catacomb can be found to the left of the Paphos-Harbour road, about one kilometre from the medieval fort. You have to descend twenty or so steps to find yourself in front of four subterranean chambers, a Holy well and an open courtyard. At a later stage the largest chamber was transformed into a church which was, originally, frescoed, traces of which can be seen today. Lower down in the second underground level, you will find the holy well, which, to this day, maintains a small trickle. The waters are said to have healing properties and are particularly good for treating eye conditions, while others refer to the treatment of Malaria.

Lempa

Lempa village is located 5 kilometres' from Paphos and is noted for having major historic significance. In it's pretty setting near the sea, Lempa's was the site of a chalcolithic settlement. Today the faithful reconstruction of several dwellings, gives an insight into chalcolithic life on the island. Near the site replicas of two houses from this period have been constructed.

Petra Tou Romiou

At this magnificent place of interest you can experience the fortitude of Aphrodite. It is here that the goddess of love and beauty emerged from the sea. Legends articulate that if you swim around the rock three times naked under a full moon, you will fall in love.

Paphos Bird and Animal Park

The Paphos Bird and Animal Park is unique to the area and an enjoyable day out for those of all ages. It houses a wide range of animals, ranging from reptiles (such as Boa Constrictors, Pythons and Iguanas), to mammals (such as Giraffe); and Birds, ranging from Ducks, Geese and Swans, to Ostriches, Parrots and Owls. The park also offers a variety of other facilities; an Amphitheatre was created in order to hold educational talks and programs, souvenir and handicraft shops and a traditional Cypriot restaurant which boasts panoramic views over the surrounding area.

Aphrodite’s Water Park - Paphos

Aphrodite’s Water Park is an exhilarating day out for those of all ages. Suitable for young and old, swimmers and non swimmers, there is something for everyone. Also take pleasure in the many other facilities the park has to offer. Quench your hunger and thirst during your action packed day, by visiting one of the themed restaurants, or kiosks. Guestbook

Dear Andrew and Tatiana

Just a quick note to say a huge thank you for the wonderful holiday in Cyprus. We all had a great time and loved your beautiful home and pool. The weather was so good we didn’t use the lounge or dining room and sat around the pool and ate outside. We found some super restaurants in Pafos so ate out each night. I don’t think any of us had appreciated what a huge island Cyprus is and just how hot it was going to be! We had a few trips out and a lovely afternoon at Pissouri Bay. Thanks once again for everything.

With very best wishes

Trixie

Dear Andrew

Thanks for everything - the extra year for taking the holiday, the welcome package and the directions!!!

Brilliant week relaxing in a superb villa and pool. September is good weather, Paphos is busy with plenty of Brits on holiday without being overfull and we all recharged our weary batteries.

The food is great and particularly liked the Gourmet.

Regards

Annton Vorderman
