Enquire nowThe Paphos region
Paphos, in the west coast of Cyprus was the legendary birthplace of the Greek Goddess of beauty and love, Aphrodite. It was out of the seas of Paphos that Aphrodite is said to have risen, and it was in her Temple in Kouklia, one of the most celebrated places in the ancient Greek world, that the worship of the goddess flourished.
For six centuries during the Hellenic and Roman periods this western town was the island's capital. Because of its importance, the whole town of Paphos has been included in the Unesco's world heritage list. Remnants of exquisite floor mosicas depicting scenes from Greek mythology are considered to be some of the best in the eastern Mediterranean as are underground tombs, carved out of solid rock and decorated with Doric pillars. St Paul together with St Barnabas, the founder of the Church of Cyprus, visited Paphos, where the Apostle converted the Roman governor to Christianity.
Today Paphos is a charming town, with every amenity, as well as a romantic harbor with a medieval castle where one can enjoy culture under the stars, such as an annual opera performance.
Inland and in the mountainous regions lay superb monasteries and tranquil villages where old traditions and customs have been kept alive since time immemorial.
The Paphos Town area
Droushia a typical Cypriot village with an ancient monastery of Agios Georgios Nikoxilitis on the eastern side of the village and the weaving museum near the center of Droushia. Polis is a small town with ideal base for trekking in the Akamas, swimming at a number of nearby beaches, touring the wine-making villages of the Akamas Heights or exploring the often wild and under-visited north-west of Cyprus. Akamas National Park is ideal for walks, offering stunning views to both sides of the island.
2.5 km to Droushia Village
15 mins drive to Polis.
25 mins drive to Paphos,
40 mins drive to Paphos Airport.
Approximately 20 minutes drive from Lara Bay & 20 minutes drive from the beach at Latchi Harbour.
Pittokopos
Pittokopos is a settlement in the District of Paphos. Pittokopos area is 2.5km away from Droushia Village, 25 minutes drive from Paphos centre and only 10 minutes drive away from Polis which is known for its famous fish restaurants, the small harbour and beaches.
Droushia Village
The little village of Droushia (Drouseia) has a population of 404. Set on the high ground of the Laona plateau, it is 27kms from Paphos and 10kms from Polis. This is a very typical Cypriot village with many old stone houses bearing traditional architecture of carved doors and windows of wood. The narrow, winding streets add to the character of the village along with the renovated village houses. There are two coffee shops that cater to the needs of the village, as well as two small supermarkets/kiosks. The nearest church is in the nearby village of Pano Arodes. But why not explore the ancient monastery of Agios Georgios Nikoxilitis on the eastern side of Droushia. This monastery is thought to have been built in the 15th century and was rebuilt in 1923 after it was destroyed by fire. From Droushia the views are stunning – you can see all the way across to the Troodos Mountains and, looking north you can see Chrysochou Bay and the seaside towns of Latchi and Polis. Looking west, there are stunning views of the Akamas Peninsula with many huge landforms scattered in between. Due to its altitude, Droushia is refreshed by a cool breeze coming from the Akamas. In fact, the name Droushia means 'cool and fresh in Greek. Until the 1980s, many of Droushia's villagers worked in the gold and copper mines near Polis. Now only one person carries on this tradition, as he has done for over 60 years, and you can find him in his workshop among Droushia's picturesque streets. There are some very good tavernas in Droushia and several supermarkets and kiosks. Once you've had a meze for lunch, why not visit the tiny weaving museum near the centre of the village?
Paphos
Paphos, Cyprus, is in the Western district of the island and is blessed with an average of 330 days of sunshine a year, allowing last minute holidays to be taken year round. The geographical diversity of the region, ranging from the coast, with soft sandy beaches, picturesque inlets and coves, to the hills and woodland of the Paphos Forest, lends itself to visitors of many interests. Walking, cycling, sunbathing, golf, deep water fishing, bird watching or nature photography and a range of water sports are all available in Paphos, gaining the region a place on the UNESCO list of Cultural and Natural Treasures.
Paphos Town's turbulent past gives it a wealth of historic places of interest to visit, including the Byzantine Castle of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings, and the remains of the Roman Governor's Palace with its fine mosaics, or the remains of the Temple of Aphrodite
Paphos Town is the capitol of the region, and the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite the Greek Goddess of Love, and proves a popular destination for tourists.
