The Rethymnon Prefecture region
Panormo is a friendly, typically Greek, seaside village on the north coast of Crete. It has a very warm and friendly atmosphere and is an ideal holiday base for people wanting to stay in Crete. Once you land in Heraklion, it is very straightforward to get to Panormo by using the New National Road, which runs almost the length of Crete, along the north coast. As Greek roads go, it's a very good one, but think more “A1” than motorway! Depending on how quickly you drive, it should take between 45 and 55 minutes from Heraklion Airport. In the village of Panormo itself, there are narrow streets to explore; it's the perfect place for those who want to escape a little and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Cretan life. There is a good selection of cafes, traditional tavernas, a butcher, a baker (hot, fresh bread every morning from 9am!) and shops where you can sample the local food and drink at very reasonable prices.
If you have children, Panormo is ideal. This is not only because they are given a warm welcome in the village, but because there are lovely sand and pebble beaches to play on. The sea is gently shelving, beaches are well protected and there are interesting rock pools to explore.
For older children, there are numerous options including swimming / snorkelling in the sea. Watersports such as pedalos, banana boats, jetskis are available at the main beach. There is a scuba diving centre at the Creta Marine Hotel, on the outskirts of the village. Additionally, there is a snack bar with pool tables on the harbour front and tennis courts on the outskirts of the village, if you're feeling particularly energetic.
Also Bali which was a small fishing village, but over the years has become a charming touring village, overlooking the little fishing harbour and the sea. It is a very attractive and romantic place, combining sea and mountains. Life is easy going enjoying the sun and the clear calm sea at a number of sandy and shingly beaches. Bali offers a large choice of taverns, restaurants, little shops, diving school, bars and discos.
Finally, should you feel like having a late night out or do some shopping, you can drive to the lively city of Rethymno, a 15min drive away.
The Prefecture of Rethymno is the heart of the island of Crete and is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. Rethymno awaits you with clear blue seas and Mount Psiloritis, there are traces of a civilisation that dates back 4,500 years, numerous Byzantine churches and monasteries, enchanting Venetian monuments, the most well-preserved Renaissance city in Greece, with endless beaches, caves, gorges and unique flora and fauna.
Rethymno and its villages are live postcards, which are pervaded by the aroma of Cretan cuisine and the sound of the Cretan lyre.
People live here amidst nature and emotions, outside the code of behavior found in big cities. No matter where you go, be it even to the most isolated village, our people will open their doors to you to treat you to a "tsikoudia" and befriend you.
Rethymno is the homeland of Zeus, the god of Hospitality. The great number of visitors who return repeatedly confirms the words of the poet: ”Rethymno is not a place where you go to, but a place where you return.”
This is the Rethymno we offer you as an alternative for your holidays and we invite you to discover it.

"Please daddy, I don't want to go home"
Two families, four adults and a total of seven children (aged 6 to 14) stayed here in August 2013. Oh what a find.....From the very moment we drove in through the electronic security gates we known we had found a little bit of paradise in Crete. The Villa is ideal for a large group or two families as it is actually split into two apartments, one on the ground floor and one above - and they are almost identical. Every day for two weeks we swam, relaxed, enjoyed the huge garden, eat too much and some people would also say drank a little too much as well. But when you have hosts as generous as the owners of Villa Ioanna, you can't but eat and drink too much! Every few days we received wonderful food parcels - one day it was kilos and kilos of grapes or watermelons, the next it was wonderful sweets deserts and ice cream. Coupled with the fridge and cupboards that were already full of fruit, veg, milk, butter, tea, coffee (the list goes on and on...) as well as a few bottles of local raki. But the highlight had to be the wonderful lunch that was cooked for us in the outside ovens at the villa - lamb and wild boar with salads, potatoes and more raki than I care to remember! The Villa is located just a few mins drive to Panormo good for the local bakery, supermarket, cash machine and also post office. Perama is slightly bigger and again has a good selection of shops (drive over the Iron bridge, up the hill and you'll get to the main shopping street). The villa is ideally located for a range of days out. But be prepared, if you haven't driven in Greece before, it's certainly an experience. We visited Knossos, Chania, Rethymnon, Arkadi, Melidoni Cave, Margarites and the villages in the Amari valley as well as beaches at Bali, Elafonissi and Preveli to name but a few. Be prepared if you are going to Preveli beach, its a long unmade road and when we were there, it was fairly windy. If you are going to Elafonissi, then it's just a long way.... The highlight too many to mentioned. The one slight downside is the little dirt road as you approach the villa, it's not that easy to spot from the main road from Panormo to Perama. Small hint, you can just see the villa from the road, so just keep a watch for it, especially if it is at night.
