The Paphos region
Polis is situated to the North West of Cyprus. The Akamas Peninsula lies to the West and it is a 30 minute drive from Paphos.
Polis caters well for independent travellers and is well known for its nature, and those keen on active holidays including cycling, hiking, horse riding, scuba diving and golf.
Polis is rich in history, dating back 3000 years. It was built on the ancient cities of Marion-Arsinoe. Over the past 20 years many artefacts have been unearthed including statues, jewellery and decorated pottery which is displayed in the local museum which opened in 1998.
The Akamas peninsula nearby covers about 230 square km and is located on the western tip of Cyprus. Protected as an area of outstanding natural beauty, it is the perfect location to enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking.
A major characteristic of this peninsula is its beaches. Akamas is the only large unspoiled coastal area remaining in Cyprus.
The Baths of Aphrodite are just along the coast from Latchi. According to myth, the goddess Aphrodite used to bathe in the pool of the nearby grotto which is shaded by a fig tree and has a continuous run of water from the overhead rocks. The baths are considered a source of fertility, and even now young Cypriot women go there early to avoid the guard, to bathe in the water.
The Pano Akourdaleia area
Akourdaleia is a quaint traditional village with a pretty church and stone houses. It is on 2 levels and the views get better as you drive up to Villa Quardia. It is close to Kathikas village, popular with our clients for its good tavernas, Polis and Latchi at the coast in one direction, and Coral Bay, Paphos and the Akamas National Park in the other.

Polis caters well for independent travellers and is well known for its nature, and those keen on active holidays including cycling, hiking, horse riding, scuba diving and golf.
A stunning unspoilt resort, dotted with citrus groves and beautiful turquoise waters, it is the least developed beach resort in the South of Cyprus. Varied landscapes are to be found here including rocky mountains, meadows and forests. Polis faces across Chrysochou Bay to the Akamas Peninsula where many hiking trails can be found.
The town is partly pedestrianised and has a laid back feel to it. You can find international food as well as excellent traditional tavernas, (we will send you information on Eating Out etc.)

Over the past 20 years many artefacts have been unearthed including statues, jewellery and decorated pottery which is displayed in the local museum which opened in 1998. The local beach is at Polis Chrysochous Camp site, the only location in Cyprus where a eucalyptus forest meets the coast. The sandy beach is about half a mile walk into the town of Polis or alternatively there is a flat coastal walk way to the neighbouring resort of Latchi.
Facilities at the beach include showers, toilets, washing facilities, beach volley ball court and a snack bar.
Latchi is a picturesque fishing village which stretches 3km along the North West coast of the Island and lies on the edge of the beautiful Akamas National Park. The pretty harbour offers a number of excellent fresh fish tavernas that have turned out to be famous across the Island.
There are several beaches in Latchi which are perfect for swimming. They are covered with fine sand. Sunbeds and parasols are available to hire.
Latchi is the perfect resort for water sports as it has such clean sea water. You will find windsurfing, snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing, parasailing, sailing and fishing here. There are also plenty of boat trips to choose from. Latchi is home to beautiful scenery and nature, making it perfect for trekking and there are plenty of organised nature walks for you to enjoy.
The Baths of Aphrodite are just along the coast from Latchi. According to myth, the goddess Aphrodite used to bathe in the pool of the nearby grotto which is shaded by a fig tree and has a continuous run of water from the overhead rocks. APHRODITE TRAIL
The Aphrodite trail is considered one of the most beautiful walks in Cyprus, stretching 8km along the Akamas. The Akamas, an unspoilt stretch of coastline is an area of outstanding natural beauty and has been protected as such. The trail follows the route described in Greek mythology used by Aphrodite and her lover Adonis.
The trail begins at the Baths of Aphrodite which is a very popular tourist spot on the island. (The Baths of Aphrodite Fish Tavern here is a favourite with our clients.) From here the route ascends towards the 860 year old ancient oak tree, believed to be Aphrodite mythical lovers’ nest. Other highlights of the trail include stunning views of the blue lagoons from the high point at Moutti tis Sotiras. We highly recommend the boat trip from Latchi to see all of this, (especially if it is too hot to walk) it is stunningly beautiful and you get the change to swim in the clear turquoise sea too!
In Spring time you can expect to see colourful displays of wild flowers, although you are forbidden to pick them. There are many shrubs such as carob, olives, strawberry trees and mastic. Your senses will also be treated to a heady cocktail of scents such as wild thyme, rosemary, pine and juniper berries.
This trail gives you a true sense of hiking in an unspoilt paradise. On the way back you can stop and buy brightly coloured dragon fruit. (No sign, just look for the fruit and stop). Trail maps can be obtained from the tourist information office in Polis.

It is a lovely Villa with everything you could wish for and we have just returned from a very interesting and restful two weeks. The views are spectacular looking across the Valley and up to the mountains and then turn to the left and you can see the sea at Polis. It is beautifully secluded with a lovely pool and surrounding area bordered by a wonderful array of roses and three “Bottle Brush” bushes which were just coming into full bloom. The Villa itself is fully equipped to a very high standard with very new equipment and the welcome pack was as usual very comprehensive. The villa is set between Pano & Kato Akourdaleia which now have a very good road between Kathikas and the Paphos to Polis road, there are some really good supermarkets in Skoulli, Glykis & Byrons which we found to be very comprehensive and generally cheaper than the large ones in Polis. Whilst on holiday we only have Breakfast and a very light lunch in the villa, there are a lot of good Tavernas in Kathikas, Petradaki in particular was extremely good and very reasonable and if you want a traditional Cypriot meal, Pangratios in Miliou should be visited. If a massage is on your list the Akamas Health Farm at Drouseia has wonderful facilities and very competitive pricing. The small Museum in Steni is well worth a visit as it is very comprehensive and the flowers in and around the village are stunning. Quardia is a fantastic place to stay with lots of wildlife, Lizards galore both skinks and the larger “Dinosaur” variety, bluetits feeding their young at the front and Swallows making their nest inside the Pergola, whilst just up the road you can hear and see Goats on their daily trek with a Lady goatherd. There is a Herb Garden just up the road which you can visit. We found loads to do and our two weeks flew by doing something new in Cyprus virtually every day even though we have been coming for over 25 years. If you are intending to visit Cyprus we can recommend Sundance as giving you that bit extra, this is our third time with them and we will be back again in July. Thank you Irene for another great vacation. |
