The Goa region

Goa is known the world over for her beaches and the grandeur of her churches and temples. But there is so much more to discover about Goa - a cruise through her backwaters will take you past sleepy villages, and if you are lucky, you could spot crocodiles, migratory birds. You can visit sites of ancient rock art, temples that date back over 12 centuries, visit stately mansions, spice plantations, a variety of museums of great interest, art galleries, visit local markets bursting with an amazing array of goods. At night, Goa comes to life with her nightclubs, pubs, night markets and restaurants offering a choice of local or world cuisine. The beauty of Goa's countryside has to be seen and experienced.

Panaji

Panjim is ideally situated more or less at the center of Goa. Being the capital city, there is always something happening right through the year. The Portuguese, who ruled over Goa for over 450 years left us a rich legacy. Many still speak Portuguese, our food is a local adaptation of many Portuguese dishes, the local architecture as seen in the older houses shows a mixture of Indian and Portuguese features. However, the Latin Quarter in Panjim is famous as it closely resembles a famous 'bairo' in Lisbon. For someone wishing to explore Goa, it makes sense to stay in Panjim, as travelling to various parts of Goa is easy. However, the city itself is noisy and congested. This is where Altinho, just a kilometer away from the heart of Panjim, scores. It is quiet, with beautiful tree lined roads ideal for leisurely walks. Here you will find a Center for the Arts, a well equipped hospital, centres for higher learning, a Jogger's Park, stately homes, and a few Government offices.
