Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
The Main House is on a 9 acre property of coconut palms and a 190 metre beach front. There are two en-suite bedrooms and a small bedroom with full size bunk beds. There is easy access to a quiet white sandy tropical beach. Meals are on a self-catering or a fully-catered basis and are normally taken on the front or rear verandahs. The high thatched ceiling and a pleasant breeze keeps the house cool during the day. All bedrooms have bedside fans.
The front of the property overlooks the beach and the ocean is warm and safe. A few kilometers offshore is a national Marine Park where there is excellent snorkeling and diving. Boats and snorkeling and diving equipment can be hired to go out to the Park. PADI courses are offered by a nearby diving school with qualified and internationally experienced instructors.

Day-time staff ensure the beach is clean. Locally made beach chairs and beds are available next to the beach.
There is a choice of walks: along the beach or in the bush. The beach is over 3 kms long with adjoining beaches on either side. Beach walks are best done between high tides and in the nights close to full moon. The beach has an impressive number of tens of thousands of small nocturnal “ghost” crabs; it is an astonishing sight to see so many of them.
At the back of the property is a grassland area where the local Maasai herd their cattle. In the evenings it is a peaceful walk and a pleasant alternative to the beach.
The staff speak English and Swahili. The large garden is shared with other cottages. A car is not essential. A vehicle can be hired locally.
The North East Tanzania region
There is an airstrip nearby with chartered flights to and from Dar es Salaam and Arusha. There is also a scheduled daily flight linking Arusha, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.
The warm waters of the Indian Ocean provide a comfortalbe swimming temperature all the year round. The hottest months are October and February. The rains are from mid-March to mid-May. The cottages are well-ventilated and cool. Day time temperature vary from 26C to 34C depending on the time of year and night temperatures from 22C to 28C.
Pangani is 14 kms from Ushongo. It is a small sleepy town of 15th century Arab origin situated on the north side of the Pangani River mouth. A ferry connects the roads to the north and south. The nineteenth century German Fort and some of the old houses are part of Pangani’s history. There are cultural and historic tours, up-river boat trips to the coconut plantations, and visits to a nearby marine fossil site.
Saadani National Park is a ninety minute drive from Ushongo. Full day or overnight visits are recommended. Although Saadani is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania most large species can be seen such as lion, elephant, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and buffalo. The Wami River in the south has hippos and crocodiles. A simple mobile camp can be arranged on request.
Snorkeling/Diving off Maziwe Island in the Coelacanth Marine Park. Maziwe Reef is excellent for both snorkeling and diving. Snorkeling is $45 per person and includes the park fee of $12.50, boat, crew and snorkeling equipment. Children are half price. The trip starts at 8 a.m. and returns mid-day. Fun diving starts at $120 for a double dive.
PADI Courses are held by the nearby Kasa Diving School owned and operated by PADI European qualified instructors and their Tanzania staff. Courses are for 2 or more days. A 4-day Open Water Diver Certification course is $490.
Sailing: There is a 7-metre Westerly-22 day cruiser with a bilge keel available for hire at $100 per half day or $150 full day. The local villagers use small wooden trimarans called “Ngalao” which are quite fast but the narrow hollowed out tree trunk is not designed for comfort and is not safe in strong winds and white caps.
Zanzibar Island is 40 kms from Ushongo. It is a two and a half hour boat ride to Kenrock at the northern end of Zanzibar. Stone Town, the capital town of Zanzibar, is an hour’s drive from Kenrock. A spice tour and the narrow streets of Stone Town are recommended. Two days are recommended to include both a Spice Tour and Stone Town.
