The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

The Western Rhodope mountains are both beautiful and mystical, and lie just north of the border with Greece. They are host to many species of flora and fauna and are largely unspoilt and very tranquil. The winter and summer weather is exceptional with good winter snowfall and long periods of beautiful winter sunshine. In the summer the climate is Mediterranean in nature with an excellent sun record. You can expect to enjoy hot summer days and cool evenings.
There are many tourist attractions and great summer and winter sports pursuits for the adventureful traveller.
The Pamporovo / Stoikite area
The area boasts beautiful unspoilt wooded mountains and valleys with lovely tree lined pistes. Perelik Palace is located in the heart of the walking routes in the Western Rhopean mountains. The Pamporovo Ski resort is being developed into a super-resort with many new runs and lifts which will eventually make it one of the best ski locations in Eastern Europe. The Skiing is excellent for beginners, novices and intermediates, but there are also excellent serious black runs as well as some great off-piste adventures.
Stoikite is a traditional Bulgarian mountain village with local shops and services. Pamporovo is a lively alpine flavoured ski resort with many good restaurants and bars and hotels and has good entertainment and apre-ski offerings.
Smolyan is the nearest large regional town with excellent amenities and good shopping.
Prices in Bulgaria are still very good value and you can expect prices to be about half of that you may experience in typical French or Austrian resorts (goods, services and food). This also applies to ski lift passes, ski equipment hire, and ski tuition. Perelik Palace is a stunning new 4/5 star Spa hotel complex with superb facilities, and is set in a beautiful and tranquil location and yet is only a short distance from the new 6 man ski lift

We stayed in this apartment furing January 2011, and had a really great time. The apartment is very spacious and is very well appointed. What's great about this apartment is that although it is fully self-catered, it is located in a 4/5 star hotel and therefore all the facilities of the hotel are at hand. The hotel staff were courteous and helpful, although their English was a bit limited. Our main problem was understanding the written language which was often (but not always) in cyrillic. The Hotel is located near to a new 6 person ski lift which I believe was built in couple of years ago, and this lift takes you right into the heart of the Pamporovo ski resort. There is also a new piste which runs all the way back to the ski lift. It's possible to walk to and from the ski lift from the hotel on a short forest path, but the hotel provides a regular free courier bus service direct to the lift which is what we used each day. The other great thing about the lift is that they allow non-skiers to use the lift, so that you can meet your non-skiing friends at one of the many restaurants at the top. Beginners and novices can do all their learning at the top of the mountain which is where ski school meets, and then come back on the lift at the end of the day. The apartment owners put us in touch with a local ski instructor and mountain guide who was really good, and he spoke excellent English. He provides tuition for all levels right from beginner to advanced. We met him each day at the top of the lift. At the lift station there is a ski-set shop where you can hire skis and boots etc. It is excellent value compared to other european resorts we have been to, and this is also true of lift passes and general living and eating out costs. We did get a taxi into the Pamporovo resort, but found that the prices of food and drink were very expensive when compared to local prices in the village of Stoikite, and of Smolyan (the nearest large town). The Hotel Perelik Palace was also relatively cheap, our main meal in the excellent restaurant was only 8 Euros ! The food was very good, and the restaurant was very nicely decked out in traditional mountain style. The bars in the hotel were comfortable and pleasant to spend time in, although the one criticism I have was with regard to smoke. In Bulgaria it is still legal to smoke in public places, and this took some getting used to again! |

The apartment was huge and luxurious. Everything was very clean and the apartment has been furnished and maintained at a high standard. The apartment was lovely and quiet with amazing views and sunsets. The balconys get the sun most of the day and evening The restaurant in the hotel was lovely with a large a la carte menu which was very cheap and a great wine list. The staff in the restaurant were very helpful and spoke good English. The SPA facilities were very good the only disappointment was the size of the swimming pool which wasn't very big and if a few people were in the pool it was difficult to swim. The hotel also has a huge sun terrace which gets the sun all afternoon with amazing views and the staff were very helpful and available all day. I would recommend hiring a car as most of the walks are a good 10-15 minutes drive away and it makes getting out and about a lot easier as we never saw any buses. Driving in Bulgaria isn't as scary as you think and I do recommend hiring a sat nav as it really does help and also I would get full insurance cover as some of the roads are not very well maintained and it just takes the worry out of going over any bumps in the road etc. Beaware that the maps are not very accurate in Bulgaria but they do give you a bit of a guideline but don't rely on them. |
Guestbook for Perelik Palace - Apartment 625
Dear Lin and John
I am writing to let you know we had a fabulous week. The apartment is great and the views are fantastic. We really enjoyed the treatments in the spa. The food also out and about was really good we thought it tasted as food ought to taste but rarely does back here in the UK.
Bulgaria is different but that is part of the charm we feel next time we will be prepared for every eventuality
Thank you for all your help we had a great time and certainly hope to return next year.
Best wishes Julie
