The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
The Rhodopes Mountains are some of the oldest mountains in Bulgaria, with its highest peak-Golyam Perelik (2191m) it occupies the 7th place among the Bulgarian mountains. Of particular interest are the Karst areas with their deep river gorges, large caves and specific sculptured forms – Trigrad Gorge, the caves Devil's Throat, Uhlovitsa, Yagodinska, the Wonderful Bridges. The Rhodope Mountains are well known for their exquisite beauty & charm. The mountain is composed of a multitude of mountain chains and it is the most southerly range of the Balkan Peninsula. Some of its territory occupies the territory of Bulgaria and the rest of it is in Northern Greece. Century-old spruce forests grow all the way up the mountain and in vast quantities at the higher levels while beech and pine trees occupy the lower parts. The breathtaking views which open out from the highest points of the mountain are really overwhelming. The climate in Stoykite is mild. All the four seasons are normally offered throughout the year. The summers in Stoykite are a great escape from the hot and steamy towns where temperatures can rise to 40 degrees. The average daily temperature is a pleasant 23 °C. There are cool and calm evenings with low humidity and no biting insects.
Pamporovo / Stoikite area
The village of Stoykite lies in the centre of the southern half of Bulgaria, in the very heart of the Rhodopi mountain, 15 km away from the county town of Smolyan and only 7 km away from the winter resort of Pamporovo. The village is 250 km away from the capital Sofia and 90 km away from the second largest city in Bulgaria – Plovdiv, which has the second busiest airport over the winter season in Bulgaria. The climate is perfect for summer as well as for winter recreation with 4 months of snow cover and 240 sunny days per year due to its’ Mediterranean influence. In the summer it offers countless fascinating possibilities for active recreation and tourism, such as visiting some of the historic monuments, or if you like nature you can take one of the ecologic or tourist walks in the area as well as the nearby mounts, which offer extraordinary views. How to get there
There are two main airports serving this area, Sofia and Plovdiv. The capital, Sofia, is about three hours drive away and is served by many airlines such as Easyjet (new route from London Gatwick from only £51 return), Bulgaria Air, British Airways, Wizzair, and Alitalia. Plovdiv is about 90 minutes away and several companies do flight-only deals there.
Transfers can be arranged from either airport with a number of companies. If you need help with transfers please ask as we know some local companies.
Alternatively, there is public transport which is very cheap. From Sofia to Pamporovo the fare is around 19 leva (£7). The bus journey takes roughly four hours.
Summer flights only to Sofia and car hire is recommended with an easy 3 hour drive to Stoykite.
