The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
Pamporovo is primarily a Winter Skiing resort but it is well worth a visit in the Sping, Summer and Autumn months. There are numerous places to visit around Pamporovo in all seasons. The Rhodope Mountain Range provides some of the most beautiful locations in Bulgaria.
The Grand Monastery complex is very quiet during the summer months and some facilities such as the swimming pool and spa are closed. However ther is plenty to do in the surrounding area.
Following is examples of the outdoor facilities;-
Walking - The area around the Grand Monastery complex offers numerous walks such as the "Snow White peak and Snezhanka Radio Tower" and "Smolyan Lakes". Further afield there are many short and long walks within the Rhodope Mountain range.
Mountain Biking - There is a new Mountain Bike Park "Velo Park Pamporovo" which opened in July and already as been the venue for numerous Mountain Bike Championships. The runs provide terrain for mountain bikers of all levels.
Bird Watching - is popular as species such as Wallcreeper, Egyptian Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Black Vulture and Mashed Shrike can be seen.
Flora - The meadows of the region have many rear specimen of flowers that cannot be found elsewhere in the world. In Spring the Silivriak with its pink petals can be seen and it is the symbol of the Rhodope Mountains.
Fishing - Fishing is the lakes and streams in the Rhodope Mountains is wonderful. The fish in the streams are usually small, but the lakes have larger fish, including Brown and Rainbow Trout.
Caving - The Devil Throat cave and the Yagodinska Cave are well worth a visit. The latter in 10 kms long and 5 stories tall. Vistors can enter the cave at ground level and a path takes them through the cave to allow sights of the wonderful underground world formed millions of years ago.
Pamporovo has a claim to fame in being the sunniest Ski resort in Europe. It boasts an average of 270 sunny days a year and in winter the weather provides plenty of snow and brilliant sunshine.
The resort is set in the Southern part of Bulgaria close to the border with Greece and in the beautiful pine forests of the Rhodope Mountains.
The Pamporovo slopes have approximately 37 km of marked runs and is suitable for beginners and intermediates, with a great choice of nursey slopes and lots of easy scenic runs higher in the mountain. For the experienced skier the Giant Slalom run (THE WALL) will be a real challenge.

"Bulgaria - not just for skiing holidays."
We had a great time here in July.
The air is very clear and pure - like the Alps, but not as commercial - and in the summer the area was quite the most beautiful place.
The apartment was very well fitted out - all the comforts of home - and everything was beautiful, clean, fresh and very new.
We spent some time trout fishing - just turn up, everything is supplied and had grilled trout for tea - you can't get it any fresher!
Devin with its swimming pool filled from the natural hot springs was absolutely great - we spent a couple of days there during the holiday.
I'd heartily recommend Pamporovo for a week or fortnight's break - in the winter the skiing is superb, and it's a bit of a secret - so the pistes aren't too crowded. The resort has all the facilities you'd expect - including a chair lift, almost from our door! Apres ski looks to be well catered for with lovely bar in the resort - and there is wi-fi there too.
We went in the middle of the summer and it was very quiet - just how we like it. There was still plenty to do, and the fresh air was like... Well a breath of fresh air to be honest!
