The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

When the sun goes down, the fun is anything but over. What's more apres-ski in Pamporovo is inexpensive compared to other European ski resorts.

And there's nightlife to suit all tastes; from the delights of the local folk restaurants that serve mouth-watering local specialities and extremely palatable Bulgarian wines, to laidback piano bars and discos.

As well as being an ideal centre for skiers, there's plenty of family entertainment for those who simply want to enjoy a winter holiday in a beautiful mountain resort. Try ice-skating, bowling, swimming and billiards or enjoy dinner at a BBQ restaurant with floorshow, traditional songs and dancing, or pay a fascinating visit to a traditional Rhodope home in one of the surrounding villages. There is also ski-doo hire, snow tubing, quad bikes, horse riding to name but a few.

Day trips

Car hire can be arranged and amongst the most popular are day trips to Plovdiv, sightseeing in nearby Smolyan and a visit to Sofia and the Bachkovo Monastery.

Witness the rural splendour. Visit the 'Emerald Eyes' of the Rhodope mountain area and the Smolyan lakes. The deepest and most beautiful of the seven lakes is Muddy Lake - not muddy at all! Devin Spa is famous – here you can give yourself a treat. The Yagodina Cave is the longest cave in Bulgaria and is several storeys high in parts. You can take a tour which highlights the remarkable stalactites and stalagmites which in places resemble curtains. Neolithic settlers lived in the caves in the 6th millennium BC.

There is a spectacular underground waterfall 42m fall in the Devil's Throat cave – so called because objects allowed to flow in do not flow out! The Trigradska River flows through the fantastic Devil's Throat Cave. Stretching 7,000 meters the water forms eighteen waterfalls and exits onto a canyon. It leads to Trigad Gorge, a breathtaking natural phenomenon. Its incomparable karst formation is the most impressive natural sight in Bulgaria.

Ancient Plovdiv is contemporary to Troy and there are Roman ruins and Roman roads. There is a Roman amphitheatre still in use today. The lovely old town has been restored to its mid 19th century appearance. Plovdiv is definitely worth a visit. Modern Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second city.

Zlatograd is an outdoor museum of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries – the Enlightenment period in Bulgaria.

There are numerous rock formations – for example the miraculous bridges near the village of Kosovo, 'The Elephant' near Devin and 'The Maiden' resembling a standing woman on the outskirts of Shiroka Luca.

The Greek Aegean Coast

We are not far from the Greek Aegean coast. A new road has been built through the mountains to Xanthi (via Zlatograd) which will reduce the journey time to just 90 minutes. You can reach Chalkidiki in less than three hours. This new road gives our clients the opportunity to have a two centre holiday.

Pamporovo offers extremely good value for money, with a cost of living of around a third of other European ski resorts.

It has a unique claim to fame – this bright, modern ski resort is the sunniest mountain resort in Europe. It boasts no less than 270 sunny days a year on average, and in the winter provides an ideal combination – plenty of snow (average snow depth of 140 – 150cm) and plenty of sparkling sunshine to show off the resort at its best.

Nestled in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria, this beautiful region is said to have once been the home of Orpheus. Set amongst magnificent pine forests, it's tailor-made for skiing, having well designed ski runs for beginners to advanced skiers as well as cross country skiing and snowboarding. Its offers

firstclass accommodation, a good selection of bars, restaurants and entertainment.

During the summer months the area offers cycling, horse riding, climbing and lots of places to explore for people who are interested in nature. The ski runs convert to mountain bike tracks.

Enjoy breathtaking walks or hikes amongst some of the most beautiful scenery Bulgaria has to offer.
