The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

The resort of Pamporovo is set in the south of the Rhodope Mountains. It is located at an altitude of 1620 m above the sea level, 85 km from Plovdiv city and 250 km from Sofia and offers scores of scenic routes for seeing the Rhodopes Mountain on foot.

Pamporovo and the Rhodope mountains are steeped in folklore and tradition which add to its abundant charm. It is said that the mythical singer, Orpheus, lived here. Orpheus was the most famous Greek mythical singer and poet, who could charm wild animals and even coax rocks into movement. In legend, he was one of the Argonauts and when they had to pass through the Sirens Island, it is said his music prevented the crew from being lured to danger.

Smolyan is just 15 kilometers away from the ski- resort of Pamporovo and 260 km south of Sofia. Smolyan is a small and picturesque town with an interesting combination of old and modern architecture.

Smolynski lakes are protected a area with splendid landscape- mountain lakes with coniferous forest, varied plant life. They are known as the “emerald eyes of the Rodope Mountains.” There used to be twenty, but now there are just 7 preserved. The whole region is a natural park.

Chepelare is not only famous for its 20 km long ski runs at the Mechi Chal ski center but also for the natural phenomenon of The Bridges of Wonder, and the numerous marked hiking and mountain bike tracks, leading along the Old Roman road which used to connect Tracia with the Aegean Sea in Greece. One can also find here the National Astronomical Observatory “Rozhen”, the largest observatory complex for optical astro-physics in South-Eastern Europe.

Pamporovo

Pamporovo is a purpose-built ski resort and is Bulgaria’s best bet for beginners and early intermediates, with mostly easy and intermediate runs that weave through the scenic pine forests. However for more advanced powder hounds there is great off-piste skiing and snowboarding available, as well as a few black runs including the infamous “Wall”.

All major ski runs start from the peak of the Snejanka mountain, where the TV tower is located. Easy access to this is via the new 6-Seater ski lift from Stoikite village, which is just 5 minutes from the apartment by foot. A great way to start… and end your ski day!

The slopes are patrolled and well-maintained to keep them in good condition, including snow machines in case of poor snow fall. More than 100 highly qualified ski instructors fluent in different languages are here to teach both beginners and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. There are several great restaurants and après ski bars located on the mountain, which make it an incredibly social area. It’s ideal for groups and families.

For those staying for a full week, you might like to visit to one of the other ski areas that are all within a short drive from the apartment. The longest ski run in Bulgaria is in Chepelare. The skiing infrastructure is basic, but very well maintained. It includes a brand new four-seater lift connecting the town of Chepelare with the Mechi Chal peak in just 9 minutes, at 2,700 meters. It is an area that is perhaps more suited to skiers than boarders due to the number of smaller drag/towrope lifts.

Momchilovtsiis situated 14 kilometers north of Smolyan and 12 kilometers east from Pamporovo high in the Rodopi Mountain. It is 1050 meters above the sea level. Momchilovtsi offers a brand new snow-park for boarders, as well as non-stop party atmosphere. The park is particularly attractive because it is brand new and not yet commercialized. The area is serviced by two mini drags.

Ski rentals are available near most ski runs and lift stations, including the lift station nearest the apartment.
