Home description
The Panorama Complex (completed January 2007), situated in the peaceful holiday village of Stoykite, provides high class accommodation amidst the spectacular scenery and fresh air of the Rhodope Mountains. A new 6-seater chair lift has been opened in Stoykite (December 2008) giving access to all the pistes in Pamporovo, Europe's sunniest ski resort, including 2 new pistes (7km) linking Snezanka Tower to Stoykite itself and passing 100 metres from the apartment. As well as offering excellent skiing in winter, the area provides opportunities for walking, biking, fishing and pony trekking in the summer. The charming county town of Smolyan, with its many good shops, restaurants and bars, is only 14km away, while Plovdiv, Bulgaria's historic 2nd city with its splendid old town and Roman amphitheatre, is only a 1 hour drive away. A highway currently being built will mean that the Aegean sea in Greece will be reachable in just over an hour!
The 1 bedroom apartment is fully furnished and equipped, with central heating, shower and bath ensuring a comfortable stay. Enjoy a glass of wine sat out on the balcony overlooking one of the most beautiful views one can find in Bulgaria. When not wishing to cook yourselves, enjoy the offerings from the Panorama restaurant or one of the many other excellent and great value establishments in Stoykite, Pamporovo and Smolyan. With one double bedroom and a double bed sofa in the lounge (plus a single air bed for a fifth person), the apartment can offer a relaxing and invigorating family break at any time of the year.
An identical property (Apartment 19b) adjoining the apartment is also available for booking; if both apartments were booked together they could accommodate 8 people.

The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
The complex is situated 1530m above sea level offering a wonderful view to the highest peaks of the Rhodope Mountain in southern Bulgaria - Perelik 2191m, Kuzuyatak 2100m, Snezhanka 1926m and Orpheus 1826m - and is surrounded by beautiful pine trees and meadows. The area benefits from a sunny year round climate - with no less than 270 sunny days per year; coupled with plentiful snow between mid-December and mid-April the area offers exceptional conditions for skiing.
The charming country town of Smolyan is only 14km away and Bulgaria's historic second city, Plovdiv, - the Eternal town on Three Hills -with its enchanting old town, Roman amphitheatre and splendid restaurants is only an hour's drive away. On the way to Plovdiv lies the famous Bachkovo Monastery, founded in 1083 and dedicated to Our Lady. 6km away is the attractive heritage village of Shiroka Laka with its cobbled streets, traditional Rhodopean architecture and fine bar/restaurants. A new highway is being built that will give the area easy access to the Aegean coast - a 1 hour drive will get you to the sun-baked Greek beaches.
Pamporovo area
Pamporovo is an excellent place to learn to ski; the 20km of piste include an excellent long green run for beginners as well as good blue and red runs. A couple of black runs - including 'The Wall' will tax the most experienced skier. The resort has excellent ski schools, our 4 year old son received a 2 hour private lesson for about £20. Many good and inexpensive bars and restaurants are found on the slope itself offering both Rhodopean fare and less extravagant, but equally tasty, fast-food.
Planning has now been granted for the 'Perelik Project' a massive development to link the separate resorts of Pamporovo, Chepelare, Smolyan and Perelik into one major ski area. The new resort will have 55km of ski runs, 25 ski lifts and snow guns as well as recreation, sports and entertainment to encourage year round tourism. A new 6-seater chair ski lift (the biggest and fastest in Bulgaria) has now opened in Stoykite, linking you straight into the enlarged ski area.
Excursions are available to local geological wonders such as the Uhlovitsa cave, the Devil's Throat and the Wonderful Bridges. You can take a bike tour to Mechi Chal peak and the Observatory at Rojen. Walking tours with a local guide can be arranged to Snejanka peak and the Seven Lakes of Smolyan. The ski lifts run throughout the year for the more independent explorer. Access to swimming pools is available at many of the resort's hotels - including the new Perelik Palace right next door to the Panorama complex. Also, pamper yourself with an affordable massage (£6.50 per half-hour) at the Orlovetz hotel.
How to get there
In winter, chartered flights (e.g. Balkan Holidays, Thomson) are available directly to Plovdiv airport, Bulgaria's 2nd largest city. Transfer from here to the apartment is 1 hour. www.balkanholidays.co.uk www.thomson.co.uk
Easyjet fly from Gatwick and Manchester to Sofia (www.easyjet.co.uk). Cheap scheduled direct flights from London, Dublin and Manchester to Sofia with Air Bulgaria (www.air.bg) operate throughout the year. Wizzair (www.wizzair.com) offers regular cheap flights from Luton to the Bulgarian capital. Ryanair are reportedly planning to starting flights to Plovdiv from the UK in the near future.
Use www.travelcity.co.uk.com to find the best prices for the major airlines.
The A1 motorway will take you by taxi from Sofia directly to Plovdiv (130km), from where a scenic mountain road will take you the further 80 km to Pamporovo. Transfer time from Sofia is 2.5 hours and the taxi fare is about 100 euros.
Taxi and car rental are available at both airports. We can arrange a taxi for you, but If you wish to book your own taxi we recommend you use OK SUPERTRANS (www.oktaxi.net). For car rental try Holiday autos (www.autoholidays.co.uk), Avis (www.avis.bg) or Budget (www.budget.bg). Also, www.moneysupermarket.co.uk compares prices for hire companies from Sofia airport.
