The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
The Rhodopes have a rich geological and cultural heritage, including caves, natural bridges, ancient Thracian sites such as Perperikon and Tatul, medieval castles, churches, monasteries and picturesque villages with traditional Bulgarian architecture.
With their diverse habitats, the Rhodopes are rich in wildlife. You can see birds of prey, red squirrels, wild boar, and, if you're really lucky, a bear or even a wolf! It is common to come across small road-side stalls with locals selling homemade honey and jams, which have been harvested from the verdant meadows and hedges that abound here.
Greece is just half an hour's drive away from Stoykite. In January 2010 a new passport control point was opened between Bulgaria and Greece, allowing visitors to get to the Greek seaside in no more than an hour by car.
Stoykite is 1400m above sea level. The highest peak in the area, 'Snezhanka' at 1928 m, is several hundred meters above the village.
Spring in Stoykite is fresh and warm, the summer is cool, the autumn is pleasant with a lot of sun, and the winter is long but comparatively mild. This combination allows for a long skiing season; the average January temperature is -3 degrees celsius (or 26.6 F) and the region has around 150 days of snowfall each year.
The village contains several convenience shops, two restaurants, two traditional taverns, and a tourist information centre. The annual 'Winter fest' takes place at the end of February each year.
Nearby sites of interest include the quaint village of Shiroka Laka, where a vibrant traditional music festival is held in March each year; natural rock formations such as 'The Elephant' and the 'Wonderful Bridges'; and the serene Smolyan lakes.
