Home description

Top floor studio apartment set in a picturesque area between Pamporo and Smolyan in the beautiful Smolyan Lakes area, a region known for its genuine beauty. This is a fantastically picturesque area in the Rhodope mountains, by far the most similar scenery to Swiss, Austrian or French ski resorts that can be found in Bulgaria. It is close to the future ski centre Perelik and the towns Smolian and Chepelare.

Pamporovo itself is on the north face of the Snejanka peak and the "Pine Lodge" is on the south, this can be covered on skis, or in a taxi in 10-15 minutes. The Pine Lodge is located 570m away from the lift Number 4, which leads straight to the top of the highest peak in the area (Snejanka peak). From there anywhere in the resort can be skied to, you can even ski straight to your apartment! Currently there is a restaurant and bar 50m from the complex.

The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Of all the Bulgarian ski resorts Pamporovo is most like the traditional Austrian, French and Swiss resorts. Set in the mountains and amongst the ski runs the scenery from the vast majority of developments is superb. In many cases it is possible to ski to your door, a welcomed advantage for those who finish a long day on the slopes and don’t fancy that last trek from the lift to your accommodation in those agonising in ski boots!

The area itself is covered with fur trees and is a particularly tranquil place, rather than being one town with a ski lift it actually several clusters of buildings separated by trees and ski runs. There is no exact centre but the feel of true ski resort, the smell of wood burning fires and culture of apres ski is definitely there. Pamporovo itself as well as surrounding areas and towns, such as Smolyan Lakes, provide excellent attractions in the summer months. It is an ideal region for mountain walkers, hikers and climbers.

Pamporovo is the southern most ski resort in Europe, thus it has the most sunshine and potentially the longest season. On average there are 270 sunny days and 150 skiing days per year. Snow cover is unusually thick and averages 2m throughout the ski season. Avalanches and weather changes are a rarity in Pamporovo as such closure of slopes and the sudden onset of dangerous conditions whilst skiing are unlikely. The Snezhanka peak is the highest point at 1,926m, from which there are 42km of ski runs at present. The runs vary in difficulty from basic blues to blacks, however the resort as a whole is recognised as most suitable for the intermediate skier. The lifts and tows have a capacity of 8,500 skiers per hour and are open between 8.30 and 16.30. There are more than 15 ski rental usinesses with over 8,000 sets of modern equipment for hire. Adult hire charges start at 50 Euros per week for intermediate equipment.

Snowboarders - there is a 150m half pipe with 3m walls and several snowboard schools.

Leisure and Nightlife
There are dozens of bars and restaurants all of which are reasonably priced. Eating delicious freshly grilled foods, which of course must be washed down with some local brew at the mid station, will cost as little as £3 / person. This is a key difference for holiday makers looking for cost effective ski holidays when deciding between the norm of the Alps and Bulgaria. There are traditional folk pubs which entertain in true Bulgarian style as well as nightclubs that pump out music until the early hours. Bowling, billiards, saunas and spa centres are also available.

How to get there

Budget airlines including Easyjet and Aer Lingus fly to Sofia and Plovdiv in the ski season. From Sofia the resort is around 3.5 hours but from Plovidiv around 2. Airport transfers can be arranged so getting to the apartment is not an issue. Also there are all the usual car hire companies at the airport from which cars can be rented if required.
