B&B | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 11
Laytoure is an Ariegeois farmhouse dating back to the 18th century, pleasantly situated in a tranquil rural area with rolling hills, sunflower fields and glimpses of the Pyrenees. We offer part of the house for B&B, or for longer stays you can rent the accommodation as a gite. It's completely private and separate from our own accommodation, but we are on hand to respond to any queries you may have. Our three bedrooms all have electric heaters and en suite shower rooms. They include a family suite of 2 adjoining rooms and shower room which can accommodate a couple and up to three children. Guests are welcome to use the plunge pool, gardens and outdoor furniture.
Laytoure is an excellent base for exploring the Ariege; whist the region is comparatively unknown as a tourist destination, it has plenty to offer including picturesque towns and villages, Cathar castles and prehistoric sites. Activities such as horse riding, swimming, climbing, aerial walkways, kayaking and golf are available locally. It's a great area for walking and cycling, and the St Jacques de Compostella pilgrim route runs through our village. Further afield you can travel to Carcassonne, the high Pyrenees, Andorra and the Spanish border; an hour and a half's drive takes you to the Mediterranean.
To reach us you can fly to either Toulouse or Carcassonne airport, both are under an hour's drive away.

The Midi-Pyrenees region
Our part of the Ariege has been compared to Tuscany, with its rolling landscape and sunflower and maize crops. The climate is sunny and warm compared to the higher Pyrenees, but you have frequent views of the mountains in the distance. The weather in July and August is usually hot, regularly reaching the 30s. This is the most popular season for visitors, and also the time when most towns and villages hold their fetes. May, June and September are better months for walking and cycling, and the warm weather usually continues well into October.
Laytoure is situated on the edge of St Victor Rouzaud, a small farming community. Any elevated spot gives you dramatic views of the Pyrenees. Our local town, Pamiers, 8 km away, provides all you could wish in the way of shops, restaurants and cafes. There are picturesque villages such as the bastide village of St Martin D'Oydes a short drive away. Half an hour's drive takes you to the medieval town of Mirepoix. The Tarascon area, about 40 minutes away, has a number of prehistoric caves which you can visit, of which the best is the Grotte de Niaux with its cave paintings. The Grotte du Mas d'Azil, an astonishing cave which you can drive through, also has important prehistoric remains and is only a short drive away. You can travel Europe's longest underground river at Labouiche. There are several lakes with beaches where you can swim nearby, including the Lac de Mondely and the lake at the artists' village of Carla Bayle. In the winter and early spring skiing in the Pyrenees is often possible, and the nearest ski stations of Les Monts d'Olmes and Ax-Bonsacre are only 45 minutes away. You can visit the city of Toulouse by train from Pamiers.
