Palma is the capital city of the Island of Majorca, and is located on the southern coast of this island in Spain, and is the island´s main economic and cultural resource. Recently, it was named as one of the best places to live in Spain.

Although it has become a modern, bustling city, Palma has managed to retain its ancient culture and charm, most of which can be seen in the old town.

Palma’s old town spreads out from the cathedral and turns into a maze of narrow winding streets, surrounded by impressive mansions and tiny hidden squares.

The best way to see the old town is on foot. It can easily be seen in a day and there are plenty of quite little squares and parks where you can stop off for tapas and drinks along the way.

Some of Palma’s top attractions include; the Royal Palace; the Stock Exchange; the Castle of Bellver; and the spectacular cathedral, which is one of the world’s finest and largest Gothic structures. They’re all located near the port.

Palma has every kind of entertainment imaginable; cinemas, theatres, operas, rock concerts… there’s something here for everyone. It also has thousands of bars and some excellent restaurants, serving all kinds of food.

The Mallorca/Majorca region

There are hundreds of things to do and see in Palma de Mallorca, below, we have some top ten recommendations for your Majorca vacation.

There are hundreds of things to do and see in Palma and the surrounding areas. Here’s ten of the best! …
The magnificent Cathedral; the Castell de Bellver; Parc de la Mar; Manacor; Mercat Olivar; Poble Espanyol; La Llotja; the Arab Baths; the Town Hall; or the train journey from Soller to Mallorca.

There are plenty of museums nearby as well, among them the contemporary art museum with a fantastic view of the seafront. The cathedral is not to be missed either! In the area around Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, and Jaume III is also where you go for a Palma shopping experience.

Mallorca has an ideal climate for holidaymakers with little rain and average temperatures kept below 86ºF (30ºC) even in mid-summer. Temperatures remain nice in the spring and autumn and even in winter rarely drop below 50ºF (10ºC), though rain is more likely at this time of year. Water temperatures range from 64ºF (18ºC) in May to 79ºF (26ºC) in August making Mallorca ideal for watersports.

Palma / Palma Old Town area

Palma has some excellent beaches close to the city centre and on the outskirts of town. The crystal clear waters and endless sunshine attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Palma de Mallorca is one of the best places on the island for night-life. It has a wide range of clubs, bars, restaurants and cafe bars. The night-life buzzes all night long and all year round!

There’s a wide variety of outdoor sports you can do here on the island; cycling, diving, golf, riding, sailing, tennis, trekking Mallorca is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. There are hundreds of tour operators offering every kind excursion or activity possible and providing the best in equipment and training.

Mallorca has something for everything, from beginner to expert.

The Torrent de Pareis is probably one of the best (and most difficult) places to go climbing on Mallorca. It’s mainly for experts. There are, however, a lot easier climbs… try the the Creveta de Pollença, or the last hundred metres before the Monastery of Alaró.

The waters surrounding Mallorca are home to some beautiful reefs and wrecks, as well as plenty of marine flora and fauna with lots of fish, coral, starfish, sea urchins, sponges and squid. Dive sites range from easy to challenging. There’s something for beginners, intermediate and advanced. Your instructor will know which is best for you.

There are lots of diving clubs and centres all over the island providing all the necessary equipment, instructions and training. Mallorca has over 12 golf courses that are open all year round. The climate is perfect - it’s non-stop summertime! Mallorca is perfect for cycling. The island draws thousands of enthusiasts each year. Even Telekom, the German team, trains here. The island’s landscape has everything; it’s suitable for both mountain bikes and regular cycling.

Palma de Mallorca has some very cool markets and festivals held all throughout the year. There’s always something going on in the capital city. Some of the best include; the weekly used-goods market; Nit de Foc; Saint Sebastian festival; Mare de Déu de la Salut; On Diumenge de l´Àngel; and The Pilgrimage of Sant Bernat
In Palma de Mallorca there are many museums to be found, for example; el Museu d´Art Contemporani and la Fundaciò Pilar i Joan Mirò. Also worth a visit are the Palace of the Almudaina – a cuitadella-residence built by Arab sovereigns, and la Lonja – a market dating from the 16th Century that is still very active to this day. And more; the Arab baths, the Oleza Palace, Pueblo Español, el Rastrillo.

The many invasions suffered by Mallorca through the centuries have had a great effect on the cuisine, creating one with wide-ranging and varied tastes. Not to be missed are the menus of fish and locally harvested vegetables, and actually finding a place to go for a meal will not be a problem with there being more than 1´200 restaurants in the city! And of course, for those with a more heightened interest in the gastronomic culture, we recommend a visit to the “Cellars”, authentic old warehouses where you can sample the delights of the local cuisine.
