Enquire nowThe Mallorca/Majorca region
Majorca's history has been defined by its position as a Mediterranean island. Today this means it lures the tourist hordes in their millions and fuels development across the island; in years gone by it was invaders and marauders that were attracted to the island as well as traders and seafarers.
Majorca escaped most of the troubles during the Spanish Civil War mainly due to its ruling classes being in support of Franco from the start. The loss of civil and political freedom during Franco as dictatorship had an effect, but by the 1960s the tourist trade began to bloom.
There is inevitable debate in Majorca concerning the booming tourism trade. While being of obvious importance to the economy, there is concern over the undesirable aspects that arise through mass tourism. Majorca is one of the wealthiest regions in Spain and residents enjoy one of the countries highest standards of living, yet growth of high rise hotels and the like has diminished much of the islandâ??s natural beauty. Local environment and wildlife is threatened as well the danger of local traditions being lost. Is it a delicate issue but perhaps the most important facing Majorcans today.
Majorca's own language is Catalan. The two official languages of Majorca are Catalan and Spanish. The local dialect of Catalan is MallorquÃ, even though the dialects are slightly different in most villages. Typically, young Majorcans are bilingual in Catalan and Spanish, with some knowledge of English.Despite Majorcaâ??s location in the Mediterranean, seafood is often imported. Olives and almonds are typical of the Majorcan diet. The island has over 4 million almond and olive trees. Among the food items that are Majorcan are sobrassada, arros brut (saffron rice cooked with chicken, pork and vegetables), and the sweet pastry ensaïmada.
The island is home to world no. 1 tennis players Rafael Nadal, former Everton footballer Duncan Ferguson, Cynthia Lennon former wife of John Lennon of the Beatles and many others artists and VIP number ones. The members of the Spanish Royal Family spend their summer holidays in Majorca every year in August where the Marivent Palace is located (5 km from Palma Nova).
Majorca has two mountainous regions each about 70 km in length. These occupy the north-western (Serra de Tramuntana and eastern thirds of the island. The highest peak on Majorca is Puig Major (1,445 m) in the Serra de Tramuntana.
The Palma Nova / Son Matias area
The hugely popular resort and its nearest neighbour Magalluf, are the largest resort developments of the municipal district of Calvia, and its situated on the south west coast of the island, approximately 15 km west of capital Palma de Mallorca, and the Son Sant Joan International airport.
Palmanova has fine sandy beaches with everything on hand - watersports, glass bottom boat trips, as well as kart area, countless shops, bars and restaurants are all located around the wide traffic free promenades. For those on self catering breaks, you will never be more than a few hundred meters from either McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, etc. If you do ever tire of fast food, and in all fairness to Palmanova, you will also find a number of more traditional cafes and restaurants along the seafront.

This an apartment with no airs or graces. It is built to accommodate a wide range of travellers. We were four people (two couples). There is a large flat screen t.v. if you like your telly. The view from the balcony is excellent. The location is amazingly quiet for Palma Nova as you aren't above any noisy pubs. The lift is handy for people with mobility issues. There are a number of little super markets nearby so it's handy enough for food and essential shopping. We did not have a car we were happy with just hanging out in Palma Nova and the area. The apartment is directly across from San Matias Beach which we think is the nicest beach in Palma Nova. The apartment is basic. The furniture simple. There is aircon which is great if you need it. The owner/manager is very friendly and we didn't have any issues to deal with. It isn't luxury but it is adequate. We like to be out and about and our accommodation is just a base for us and somewhere to enjoy a sundowner with a view and we weren't disappointed. It is well located the building in general is well looked after and clean. You can grab a bus to go anywhere and there is an endless selection of places to eat and drink. The apartment sleeps up to 10 if need be. |
