Altavista is near many local attractions (in addition to Rome) such as museums, historic villas, amusement parks, thermal baths, cinemas, restaurants, riding stables and outlet shopping centres. The beaches of Lazio are about an hour and a half away, while quiet hiking paths are just steps away in the Apennine hills behind the house.
All furnishings at Altavista were carefully chosen to make guests feel at home; this means there are high quality embroidered bed linens, fluffy towels, antique beds with new mattresses and pillows to ensure a good night's rest. A fully equipped kitchen and nearby mini-market make meal planning easy, and the washing machine allows for clothes washing at no extra cost (even detergents are provided free of charge). Free WIFI.
Upon request, I can send a word or .pdf version of a local guide with ideas for activities and places to visit within the area, events for the the time of year you are interested in and associations and businesses which might be helpful to those who visit the area.

Palestrina's Archaeologic museum is literally just around the corner, and many more historic and archeologic sites are nearby, as well as medieval castles, the majestic villas of Tivoli and numerous elegant palaces; within a short drive you'll find Magicland amusement park (owner can provide discounted tickets for park entry) and outlet shopping at the Valmontone Fashion District (owner can provide a discount card for extra savings when you shop). Guidonia's AcquaPiper waterpark and Tivoli's pools are a 30 minute drive away; the city of Rome, Ostia Antica and the beaches of Lazio are all within reach and make for great day trips.
Free WIFI in the house, as well as many guide books, maps and brochures illustrating what there is to do, eat and visit in the area.
Altavista is located in Palestrina, which is a beautiful hill town just outside of Rome. The cobblestone streets, historic homes, little shops with traditional products, various archeological areas and local events and festivals, make this the perfect destination for those who want to really get to know Italy, taste authentic food and have a true cultural experience. Altavista is close enough to Rome to make easy day trips, but it also offers the safety and tranquility of a quiet, relaxing holiday home at an excellent price.
Free parking is nearby, but not right in front of the house, so guests are required to walk a little (usually not a problem since guests walk in other places as they do site seeing!); hiring a car is recommended because buses are not frequent. To help with this, there are agencies which rent cars (or cars with a driver) here in Palestrina. If you have a lot of time and patience, then public transportation is a valid option. If necessary, owner will help with transportation to the train station.
Your English-speaking owner will be happy to help you with anything you might need!

The Lazio region
The Lazio Region is one of surprising beauty and much historical interest. Rome is seen as its main attraction, but there is much more to see. It’s coast line offers a variety of tourist-friendly beaches to choose from (Sabaudia, Sperlonga, Capalbio are some of the most popular), while the lower Appenine mountains offer hiking, horseback riding and climbing opportunities that would please any sports enthusiast (many companies organize tours through the region’s most alluring parks). The crystal clear lakes of the region allow for swimming and boating activities.
Day trips to historic, cultural and religious monuments are easy and fun. Centrally located, Altavista offers access to all the region’s treasures. Families will be enthusiastic about the many places to visit with children (Zoo Marine, Giudonia Acqua Piper water park, beaches, Rainbow Magicland and the Adventure Park in Valmontone, the toy museum in Zagarolo, thermal baths in Tivoli and Fiuggi, the astronomical observatory in Rocca di Cave, the lakes of Nemi and Bracciano). Religious pilgrims can follow the via Francigena which leads to Rome, or visit places of spiritual retreat such those found in Subiaco and Guadagnolo.
Local festivals and cultural events attract many visitors to the area all year round. Guided tours can be arranged to visit the most enchanting and beautiful gardens, and wine tours can be planned for wine conesseurs or sommeliers. There are so many restaurants to choose from, but Altavista’s owner has knowledge of the best ones in the area from the best pizzeria to a good typical trattoria or osteria to an elegant dining experience.
Palestrina is about 40km east of the center of Rome, 7km from the closest train station in Zagarolo, 9km from the Valmonone MagicLand amusement park and Fashion Distric outlet, about a 20-30 minute drive to the villas of Tivoli. The best beaches of Lazio include Terracina, Sabaudia, Circeo, Sperlonga, all about a 90 minute drive and make easy day trips. Public swimming pools in the area are located between 10 and 30 minutes away.
Typical food includes the flower-shaped giglietto biscuits and a kind of pasta called gnocchi alla coda di sorca (rat tail pasta!--due to the thick consistency of the noodles, NOT because there are rat tails in it!!). Then there is Frascati wine to wash down all of the traditional Roman dishes which are all delicious. The best bread is from nearby Lariano (both white and wheat loaves), due to its microclimate. While the town of Carchitti provides most of our local produce including summer fruit which can be purchased from the local vendors at their stands along the roadside.
Summer in Palestrina offers an array of events and festivals, our favourites are the strawberry festival, the Giglietto festival, Nel Nome del Rock (In the Name of Rock) music festival, the Albatros travel literature award, the Palio and other festive games for the patron saint of Palestrina. Nearby towns celebrate a wine festival, chestnut festival, wild boar festival, and many more. There are often theatrical representations, concerts, film projections, and other public events taking place in the main square of town.
