The Sicily region
Sicily is the largest and most important island in the Mediterranean, it extends for 25,460sq km. Planes of fertile red soil, excellent for the cultivation of vine grapes, citrus orchards and olive groves, alternate with hills, green in spring for the cultivation of wheat and, among the majestic mountains, Mount Etna, the most popular of active volcanoes. The climate is typically Mediterranean along the coasts, with mild, short winters and moderate rainfall.

The Palermo / Balestrate area
Balestrate is located less than an hour's drive from some of Sicily's premier tourist attractions. Some of the "must-sees" of the island include Palermo, Monreale and Cefal� with their impressive artistic heritage, Agrigento for its temples, Segesta for its Greek theatre and temple, the beautifully preserved medieval stone city of Erice, the archaeological park of Selinunte, and the reservoir of Zingaro.
Balestrate is a former fishing village with approximately 7.000 inhabitants and is situated only 40 km west of Palermo in the Gulf of Castellammare. Magnificent, kilometre-long beaches stretch west and east along the coast from the village. Behind the beach to the west of the village, there is a wood with Eucalyptus and Tamarisk. Balestrate offers everything you might need. Restaurants, bars, pubs, discotheque, supermarkets, bank machine, internet cafe. Monday is market day.
