The Sicily region
Sicily offers to the visitor a unique and unforgettable scenery made of big and small bays, promontories, steep cliffs, coves, sand dunes, granite rocks, wild islands, sun-burned countryside, natural parks and reserves, gorges hollowed by rivers, marine and land grottoes, tuff quarries… The shores and sea of Sicily are astonishing: very fine white sand beaches alternate at red cliffs, white promontories, desert dunes; it is easy to come across old and charming tuna-fisheries or small fisher-men villages surrounded by a blue or emerald green sea. The vegetation in Sicily is amazing: palms, olive trees, vineyards, orange and lemon trees, pine trees, carobs, oleanders and bougainvilleas grow all along the coast, while on mountain slopes and on inaccessible volcanoes are woods of chestnuts, beech, oaks, hazelnuts, fir trees and holm oaks. But Sicily gives you also the opportunity to know its culture and its traditions gathered through centuries of history and under different foreign dominations. Ancient customs, popular feasts, holy processions and gastronomic delights are waiting for you on every corner of the island. You may rediscover its thousands years old history through the architecture of churches, buildings and monuments, through the old arts and crafts and in the various tastes of Sicilian dishes. Wherever you go you will find traces of the island’s glorious past: Palaeolithic grottoes, Roman villas, Greek temples, Benedictine monasteries, Norman towers, Punic ships, Medieval castles, Arab mosques, Baroque churches, Art Nouveau buildings and a warm and a sincere hospitality.
Palermo / Mondello area
Mondello is Palermo’s elegant summer resort. At the beginning of the 1900s the rich Sicilian aristocrats had this area drained and then they built their wonderful summer houses in the fashionable art nouveau style. Over the century Mondello developed around its old centre, which maintained its peculiarities of a fishermen village and at the same time it became rich of little shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs. The beach of Mondello is one of the most attractive ones of the whole island: in summer it is covered by typical coloured wooden cabins and crowded with people, during the rest of the year it is a desert and solitary place although where, thanks to the warm climate, you may go swimming also in winter. The best period to stay in Mondello is October through May, when you may enjoy the beauty of the entire gulf and the overhanging Mount Pellegrino. Mondello offers any kind of entertainment: aquatic sports, scuba diving, discotheques, and often there are some very interesting sport events. Recently, a large area of Mondello (Capo Gallo) has been preserved and a marine reserve has been established. From Mondello it is very easy to visit the wonderful town of Palermo and its thousands of art masterpieces.
