The Sicily region
“Without Sicily, Italy leaves no image in the soul. Sicily is the key to everything.” That's what Goethe wrote in 1787 in his Italian Journey.
Sicily, the greatest Italian island, is situated in the center of the mediterranean sea.
In Sicily it is possible to find traces of cultures that are thousands of years old, the result of century upon century of domination by foreign powers which have left their mark on the culture and traditions of the island's inhabitants, on their physical features, their religious festivals, rites and beliefs.
Witnesses of the passing of all these population are visibile everywhere in Sicilian lanscape, from Greek temples to Roman villas, cave paintings to Phoenician towers, Baroque palaces to Art-Deco villas, Roman mosaics to those of the Byzantine period, not to mention churches, cathedrals, mosques, castles and fortified farmhouses.
Sicily is fascinating for its thousands of years of history and for its cities of art but also for the amazing natural wonders, from the majestic sight of Etna, the biggest italian Volcano, to the beautiful fine sandy beaches where you can relax surrounded by crystal clear waters.
The climate in Sicily is typically mediterranean with very hot summers and short, mild winters.
The wonderful sicilian cuisine shows traces of all the cultures which established themselves on the island over the last two millennia.
Palermo is located in the northwest of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Palermo in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The town of Palermo's name derives from the greek PANORMOS thay means "all-port".
Founded as a harbour town by the Phoenicians about 734 b.c, it boasts a millenary history that gifted the town with a remarkable artistic and architectural heritage, that ranges from rests of punic walls to villas in the Art Nouveau style (or Stile Liberty as it is known in Italy), not to mention the arabic-norman architecture, the baroque churches and the neoclassic theathers. For cultural, artistic and economic reasons, Palermo was one of the most important towns in the Mediteranean and today it is one of the principal traveller destination in the south of Italy.
In a splendid gulf, between Mount Pellegrino and Mount Gallo, at the borders of Favorita's Park, lies Mondello, palermitans' favourite beach. It is worldwide known for its white fine sand and clear and crystalline sea. Originally a small fisher's village, at the end of the 19th Century it grew into a center of tourism and today, it is worldwide known for its white fine sand, the clear and crystalline sea, the charming Art-Nouveau villas.
