The Sicily region
A trip to Sicily allows you to understand why, for the ancients, the island was so important: the sun an the warm temperature, the wheat fields, the hills in the middle, so green in springtime, so dark brown in summer! The clear sea waters bountiful in fish, the colours, the sounds, the perfumes....that's the land of myths!
And today you can still find the myth in its magical landscapes, in the power of the surrounding nature, in the beauty of the monuments, in the flavoured taste of the food...Sicily is the centre of the Mediterranean culture.
Palermo / Bagheria area
Aspra faces the Monte Pellegrino and the gulf of Palermo; it is a pretty village off the beaten track where you can experience the warmth of the Sicilians. It is the perfect place for your discovery tour of Sicily to start.
Along the seafront there are plenty of restaurants, pizzerias, take away, Italian bars and ice cream parlours, as well as all kinds of basic shops and services such as: post office, bank, chemist, tobacconist, newsagent, perfumerie, gift shops, and supermarket. Winery and local special foods shop just 200m away. Fish is sold beside both harbours and Palermo is only 15km away!!
The nearest golf course is 50 km (28 miles) 30-40 minutes drive from my house. It is open all year round. Altitude 74 m above sea level; 18 holes, Par 72; practical field, pitching green, putting green.
In summer from 1st June to 30th September boat rides along our amazing coast are available on my own motorboat. In August, free traditional sailing boat trips, operated by fisherman's organisation. In September a traditional fiesta takes place, with boat races, aquatic games and the mystic procession of the Madonna statue carried by boat and followed by the fisherman's families in their own boats. Daily fair and a fantastic fireworks display performed at the end of the celebration.
The local branch of the Naval League scuba diving centre "Pagine di mare" proposes guided biological and archaeological tours, including the attainment of licence IDEA (lasting 10 days). The highly specialized staff will guide you through the ancient citadel of Solunto to search the remains of the V sec. BC, view stocks of roman anchors and the remains of Greek and Roman amphorae, as well as visit some famous sites such as “the rock of Formica” which was considered a compass by the Phoenicians for it’s perfect alignment with the 4 cardinal points. Additionally, you will encounter gorgeous underwater flora and fauna, such as chromium plated sponges, gorgonian asteroids, octopus, Murene eels and candle fish. It is a wonderful experience not to be missed!
How to get there
Fly to Palermo Punta-Raisi; Aspra is just 40km far from the airport. Cheap flights available operated by Ryan Air from London Stanstead to Palermo.
On arrival you can get to Aspra by hiring a car, in this case I suggest you visit Sicily by Car: www.sbc.it which allows good fares. I will send detailed information and a map to reach easily the house.
The cheapest and quickest way is by catching the train at the airport buying a one way TKT to Bagheria for € 6.05 (the train will take you to Palermo Centrale in 40 min, then you must change trains and continue to Bagheria; there are plenty of trains leaving every 10 minutes to Palermo/Bagheria). I'll collect you in Bagheria for free. Otherwise, I can arrange your transfer to/from the airport for €40 total one way, for up to 3 people.

Guestbook for Sularo
We spent 4 weeks here and every day was a delight. We travelled around Sicilia but were always happy to return to aspra where we felt "at home". Antonella is a great hostess. she is always willing to help..to let us use her internet..to make reservations to hotels, to restaurants. we will happily recommend her apartments to our friends in Canada. Christine & Lawrence 05/2007Great apartment with everything we could need. The balconies were great for soaking up the sun and for watching daily life in Aspra. The festioval was a real treat too with spectacular fireworks. Antonella is the perfect host ensuring everything ran smoothly and we were happy. the charming and very friendly face of Sicily. Mark & Mandy. UK 09/2006 We have been welcomed and amazed by Antonella. There was everything you could need to start the holiday in the best possible way. Antonella took time to show us the sights of interest. We so enjoyed this. The flat is truly lovely. we liked everything especially the balconies where we had numerous meals and lying in the hot sun! We had a lovely trip to Mount Etna + fabulous meal at Taormina. We drove back to the flat over the mountains. Truly worth it! Very scenic. We will recommend this flat to our friends. Thank you once again. Frank & Caroline. UK 03/2007 Although the weather was a bit mixed, this holiday was a grat introduction to Sicily. Antonella & Gaetano are perfect hosts. Not only is the flat very comfortable and well equipped but they went to the trouble to meet us at the station, to ensure that we had enough food to keep us going until we could get to the shops, to take us round Palermo and to treat us to a splendid meal(which was at least as good if not betterthan those we ate in restaurants) on our last night. The tour round Palermo undoubtedly showed us some sights we would not have found for ourselves but Antonella even took our 11yr old son off to her home to play on the PC and try out Gaetano's Alfa Romeo so that we could enjoy the wonderful Monreale mosaics in peace...Juliette, Ewan & Rhys Scotland 10/2006 Thanks for everything. Antonella & Gaetano you both have been gracious hosts and our holiday has been lovely. Vera ospitalità siciliana. Graham & Patricia. Scotland 07/2007 What a great experience this holiday has been! this is our first trip to Sicily and we have seen real sicilian life. The village is charming and the locals very friendly. The apartment is perfect; a great base for touring the island. Antonella has thought everything to make sure her guests have all they need. We have had a great week! Karen & Terry UK 09/2006 'A poem in the style of Robert Burns' What a great wee flat! With everything a body could want To Antonella you must take off your hat For a jolly good boat jaunt The people of Aspra town A nicer lot you couldn't meet For us we wondered up and down 'Buon Giorno' they would greet And now it's time to bid farewell To the sun, the sand and the sea But we sure of this our friends we'll tell Antonella & Gaetano made Aspra the place to be. Sheila & John UK 08/2007
