About the home

Paje beach is about as close to a tropical island paradise as you can get. Sitting next to the Indian Ocean on the east coast of of Zanzibar it is a perfect place to chill out, laze on the beach, snorkel, fish or enjoy the local cuisine in one of several bars and restaurants close by. Zanzibar Stone Town is a world heritage city with winding alleys, bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses and is easily reached by car or local bus.

Other excursions include Jozani National Park, Spice Tours and Dolphin watching. The accommodation is a charming thatched bungalow in the beautiful garden of a private house. The owner's local sailing boat can be made available for snorkelling or fishing trips.

The bungalow is in a beautiful walled garden shared with the owner's private house. There is a veranda and a separate sun lounger patio. Paje Beach is about 5 minutes walk away as are several attractive beach restaurants and local bars. Paje village is a short walk away and food shopping, local buses and car hire are all available in the village. The local language is Swahili but most people speak English.

The Zanzibar region

Zanzibar is an exotic tropical island, set in the Indian Ocean, about 25 miles off the coast of Tanzania. It has a fascinating history based on trade in spices and slaves and an exotic mixture of Arab, Indian and Swahili cultures. Zanzibar Stone Town is a world heritage site. The climate is hot all the year round with an average temperature of 25-30 degrees C, there are two rainy seasons, one in April/May and the other in November. The island offers many places to visit including local fishing villages, forests, spice tours, historic sites and abundant snorkelling, fishing and diving. Zanzibar is reputed to have some of the best diving in the world with abundant marine life, good visibility and a water temperature of about 27degrees C all year round .

The Paje area

Paje has one of the best beaches in Zanzibar with palm lined, white powder sand and a tropical lagoon enclosed by a coral reef about a kilometre away. You can walk to the reef and you will see local spear fishermen hunting squid, octopus and brightly coloured reef fish. There are no sea urchins and no strong currents at high tide. The beach is gently sloping so it is perfect for swimming for up to twelve hours each day. There are some local hotels along the beach serving food, cocktails, beers, freshly squeezed juice etc all day long. The rare red colobus monkey as well as the tropical and mangrove forests canbe seen at Jozani National Park, only 10 minutes away. Google Paje and see what you find.

-Fly to Zanzibar direct or via Dar es Salaam best airlines are Emirates or KLM but several others.

-From Dar es Salaam there are regular flights and sea ferries to Zanzibar.

-Paje Village is about 40 minutes from Zanzibar Stone Town - lots of cars and buses.

“Holidays for me have to be a combination of relaxation and adventure, this holiday was the perfect m” This was my first time to Zanzibar and a holiday I will never forgot. I booked to stay for 10 days, I wish I had stayed longer! The bungalow that I stayed in was very quaint. I loved its basic nature which blended perfectly with the gardens outside, a really space for relaxation and reading. Because it is private property you feel you can just relax without other people and families constantly going past. Going to the local store and cooking on your own stove was all part of the adventure. All of the basics were provided to a great standard, the shower in particular impressed me, great relief after a long day at the beach and was powerful enough to get salt out of my very thick long hair! (this is very important to me) The peaceful nature of the bungalow meant you had your own sanctuary if needed, however, its close proximity to the beach was ideal. I really enjoyed the beech bar and all that paje had to offer. I loved the walk along the beech to the next village and restaurant that looked out over the sea, walking back by moon light was magical. I also enjoyed trips into stone town where you are bombarded by smell and colour, a real mix of old and new, steeped in tradition whilst still offering a cold beer and the internet! I would recommend checking out all of the spices that this amazing island has to offer. All in all an incredible holiday and adventure. The beaches are amazing, you think they look good in the pictures but with your own eyes they just get even better. There is lots to do and so much culture to take in. Alternatively, there is enough for you on the door step to do nothing but top up an amazing tan! The roads are not like they are in the UK and you do often come across the odd cow. I would always get advice on the best way to travel especially if you have a family and the rules of the road is you are hiring a car. I was very impressed with how quickly the holiday was organised and always felt that someone was available had I had any grievances or questions. Cant wait to go back. Kate
