You can lie in bed at this secluded Cotswold cottage and gaze out of the window over an unchanged rural scene. The Byre at Quercus Bluff is a unique holiday hideaway that has been created by its craftsman owner to provide a peaceful rustic retreat in the heart of the South Cotswolds countryside. The Byre is approached via a long unmade track which leads down hill from the outskirts of Painswick to the peaceful pastures of Quercus Bluff farmstead. The former cow byre and adjoining barn (now the owner's home) have been imaginatively converted using locally sourced materials, including felled oak from the farm's woodland for the doors, window frames and roof timbers, and reclaimed flagstones from Sheepscombe Church for the floor.Three bedrooms and a vaulted living room are simply furnished with hand-crafted and rustic items, and all the rooms overlook the garden and valley beyond.

This is a place of peaceful solitude and privacy, a chance to enjoy the slower pace of life of a bygone age.

wo double bedrooms, and a third room with bunk beds, provide for up to 6 adults. (two would have to sleep in the bunks) The rooms are simply furnished, and all have uninterrupted views over the valley. A quirky shower room has a stone trough as a shower tray.

Double doors from the living room open onto the sheltered terrace with far-reaching views over the countryside. The fully enclosed garden is private and secluded, and is a perfect escape from the pressures of modern life. Cattle often graze the field beyond the garden, and buzzards may be seen soaring over the valley.

In the lower meadow is a wonderful picnic and camping area, with hand-crafted wooden furniture, a shallow pond which is home to ducks and dragon flies - and even an earth closet or “long drop”!

The Cotswolds region

The Cotswolds are visited by many travellers from all over the world and feted for their beauty and history. The soft sand coloured lime stone cottages, whole villages of them, are truly picturesque. Many television series have come here to make use of the timeless sight of rows of cottages ranged along a stream, or a five hundred year old bridge, seemingly unchanged for centuries. Visit Bourton on the Water and Stow on the Wold.

You may not want to leave the tranquility of the farm and the cosy Aga but for those who want to explore the local area, there is much to see:

In Painswick (1 mile) the churchyard features 99 curiously trimmed yew trees and the largest collection of fine table tombs in the country. Pubs, restaurants, and an award winning deli offer refreshment, and the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen gallery (which includes some of David Murray's wood craftsmanship) showcases some of the area's talent.

A popular Farmers' Market takes place in Stroud (3 miles) every Saturday, and an artists' Open Studio event is held every Spring. Why not also visit Woodruffs Organic Cafe -

Footpaths and bridleways, including the Cotswold Way long distance national trail, pass close by, providing outstanding views of unspoilt countryside.

Regency Cheltenham is an elegant and cultural town and should be visited. Be warned there are many gorgeous shops and restaurants and you may need to spend more time there than you think! The Everyman Theatre has many good productions and should be considered.

Visit Gloucester Cathedral and it's famous flying arch and whispering gallery. Also the docks are home to some classic tall ships.

We are an hour away from Bristol which has many activities and family attractions as well as theatres, clubs and venues.

"Idyllic hideaway with stunning rural views"

I love The Byre at Quercus Bluff! If you want rustic charm and a family getaway this is it. This cottage has been lovingly crafted and is very comfortable. Two small but extremely pretty double bedrooms and a lovely bunk bed room for the kids. Beautiful open plan sitting/dining/kitchen with Aga. Cosy, warm getaway in the winter months & perfect for the summer as the dining area opens up into the most stunning garden with endless cotswold, undulating landscape surroundings. Fantastic walks and easy access to the wonders of Painswick and beyond.
