The Powys region

The old county of Radnorshire, now part of Powys is part of the Welsh Marches, the historic border between England and Wales. There are many castles in the area, the nearest in Painscastle and more information can be obtained by visiting the Castles of Wales web site

The local economy is based on agriculture and tourism with isolated communities and narrow lanes.

Paincastle

Hay-on Wye, famous as the "town of books" is also home to the famous literary festival held at the end of May and beginning of June each year. There are a growing number of shops selling antiques and collectables and these compliment the book shops.

The Granary provides an ideal centre for walking or cycling holidays with easy access to the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons, the Radnorshire Hills and Offas Dyke Path for the walkers and cycle routes for all ages and abilities in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The Roast Ox Inn is located in the centre of Painscastle, providing first class food in a real "pub" environment. It is a 20 minute walk from the Granary along a quiet country lane.

"Home from Home, highly recommend"

This cottage is a real gem. Its so comfortable. The views from the reclining chairs in the lounge are stunning. It is fully equipped with everything you will ever need. It was bigger than my own home and so lovely for us and the kids to each have an ensuite!! Our girls loved being able to see the animals every day and feed Eric the pony. Peter and Trisha were so hospitable and so very kind to us. Really lovely place to stay i would highly recommend it.
