The Poitou-Charentes region
This region has the 2nd highest level of sunshine in the country after Provence.
The region has a rural feel to it, with agriculture being the main occupation of the locals. This gives the area it's lovely open feel with vast fields of wheat, oil-seed rape and sunflowers. The beautiful blue sky of the day gives way to wonderful sunsets and stunning night-time displays of stars
Within the region is La Rochelle, just one hour away, with its historic harbour where you can sit and eat at its many outside restaurants. The town has many fine shops and boutiques. Beside it is the Ile de Re,a beautiful island with several small villages ideal for sightseeing and swimming.
A contrast can be found in the Marais, also known as the Green Venice, where there are numerous quiet waterways and several relaxing restaurants.
The historic cities of Saintes and Poitiers are less than an hours drive away. Visit the ampitheatre in Saintes and walk around the signposted routes through Poitiers
About an hours drive south is Cognac where you can visit a distillery and see how cognac is made and try a few samples!
Paille is a pretty little village 1km from Chez Nua with a local bar/restaurant and grocery which supplies fresh bread every day. The historic town of Aunay de Saintonge is 5 km away and here you will find supermarkets, restaurants, hairdressers, chemists and tennis courts and swimming pool . Every sunday morning there is a farmers market where locals and tourists mingle. You can buy fresh french produce and sit at one of the outdoor bars and watch the world go by.
Close by you will find the medieval town of St Jean D'Angely which still has some lovely medieval houses and a beautiful Abbey dating from the 11th Century with guided tours during the summer months. The town has some great restaurants suitable for al fresco dining, and being close to the coast , seafood is a speciality.
There is a major watersports centre beside the lake in St Jean with outdoor swimming pool ,park for the children and crazy golf.Fishing is allowed on the lake and licenses can be purchased locally. There are also some lovely picnic areas, and a restaurant which serves food all day
