Padstow

Porthcothan Bay

Porthcothan is located approximately 5 miles from Padstow on the coastal road, and is the most southerly of the “seven bays for seven days” group of beaches which also include Constantine, Trevone, Harlyn and Treyarnon which are all close by.

Porthcothan Beach

Porthcothan has a lovely bay, popular with families, with a small stream, running across the sandy beach, which is sheltered by sand dunes and headland. At low tide there are numerous rock pools and other nooks and crannies to poke around in.

Porthcothan is a dog friendly beach all year round and opposite the beach you will find the main car park just a short stroll away, there is also a lifeguard patrol between May and September.

Surfing at Porthcothan Bay

Surfing is a very popular activity in Porthcothan and Waves Surf School are able to offer lessons to all levels although Porthcothan is notably a fantastic beach for being introduced to surfing. Gentle waves break and roll towards the shore allowing all novice surfers the opportunity to catch quality waves to progress.

Shops at Porthcothan Bay

The one shop is Porthcothan Bay Stores and as well as general groceries, drinks and snacks will also hire out wet suits, body boards and deckchairs, they also now have a cashpoint machine located in the store.

Walking in the Porthcothan Area

Porthcothan is located along the south west coastal path with the headland and cliffs to the north of Porthcothan are owned and protected by the National Trust, which makes for plenty of wildlife and a diverse flora and fauna. From here there are stunning views towards Trevose Head and the lighthouse, off the coast of Porthcothan there are several little islands to the left, called Trescore Islands, to the right is Will's rock and slightly further north are Minnows Islands and Fox cove.
