The West Country / Cornwall region

Cornwall Beach, the county is rightly well known for its beaches. Whether you are down here on a beach holiday Cornwall and looking for a beach to take granny and the kids with easy parking and likely safe bathing, or are more energetic and fancy a Cornish Coast Path Walk thrown in, here's a few ideas for you

The Coast of Cornwall, one of the most beautiful coastlines in England. From towering cliffs, windblown estuaries, superb surf beaches, fishing coves, harbours, to sheltered tree lined creeks, even an island topped by a castle. The Cornwall Coastal Path Coast Footpath makes so much of it accessible to the walker and hiker

Cycling in Cornwall -The Camel Trail a cycle path following the line of a disused railway, runs along the beautiful the Camel Estuary from Padstow the 6 miles to Wadebridge, and on , for the more adventurous, another 8 miles to Bodmin ; and yet on again to the western edge of Bodmin Moor, the rugged heart of Cornwall. Trail Cycle hire. Left your bikes at home? No problem, there are several bike hire shops in Padstow Wadebridge and Bodmin from which to rent one. Whole day, half day, and evening hire. From montain bikes to adult tourers to childs trailer bikes to tandems. The Camel Trail, is very popular, particularly during the School Holidays.

Cornwall Gardens From Trevarno's enchanting lake with its Victorian boathouse to the sub-tropical delights of Trebah to the landscaped grounds of Anthony House there are over 60 great gardens to explore.

On the North Cornish cliffs , with spectacular views up and down the Coast. After stopping to have a look at the Castle Remains, constructed in the 13th Century by Richard Earl of Cornwall, cross the wooden bridge to the Island and climb the steps to more ruins. Even more memorable with a winter gale lashing in from far out in the Atlantic Ocean.

Padstow area

Maybe you want to go horse riding or sea fishing , learn to Surf or fly a micro-lite? Bodmin Airfield and Davidstow have various options for getting airborne. The many Ports along this coast offer boat hire in all forms. Perhaps you prefer to walk the coastal paths to see the sites, north Cornwall has hundreds of miles of footpaths and walk ways both inland and coastal. Kayaking and canoeing or hiring a boat are also popular ways to see the coastline from a different perspective. For golf lovers there are fantastic fairways to be found.

Some of the closet towns to our cottages are Padstow and Newquay -

Padstow is an important fishing port and harbour of refuge on the North Coast of Cornwall, a haven for many visiting yachtsmen. A well-known fish restaurant owned by Rick Stein is now to be found in Padstow and he has appeared many times on television. The railway line to Padstow was closed in 1967 and is now the 'Camel Trail', where it is possible to walk or cycle from Padstow to Bodmin, via Wadebridge. On May Day every year there is a festivity called the Obby-Oss where the junior inhabitants assemble in the street and process through the town following a painted effigy of a horse, and singing in praise of St George. The origin of this event is propably pagan.

Newquay, facing the Atlantic Ocean on the North Cornwall Coast is the largest resort in Cornwall, and self styled surfing capital of Britain. Once a isolated fishing community, reliant on pilchards, with an still unspoilt harbour. Why not wander along the Quay, where at high water the local fishermen unload their catch- baskets of crabs destined for top restaurants. It is also the place to book a sea angling trip.

The beaches are the main ‘sights’ in Newquay with something for everyone whether you’re a swimmer, surfer or sandcastle builder. Fistral Beach is the main surfing beach, while two-mile-long Watergate Bay is a great place to learn at low tide. Holywell Bay has shallow waters that are good for paddling with children. To see fishermen hauling in their catch, Newquay Harbour’s the place to head.

If you’ve had enough on the beach there are lots of other activities to keep you busy nearby. Try Newquay Zoo or the Monkey Sanctuary for some animal magic, or Waterworld or Oasis Fun Pools for a splash of watery fun. Other theme parks include Holywell Bay Fun Park with everything from go-karting to a climbing wall, while Blue Reef Aquarium on the main beach is a good place to go for a glimpse of what lies beneath the waves. Cornwall’s best-know attraction, the Eden Project at St Austell, is worth a day trip if you’ve the time.

There are many other attractions, sights and events going on, just too many to list

How to get there

Fly to newquay airport and st columb is a short taxi drive away costing £5 or a car hire is available at the airport with eurocar.

As you travel down the A30 you reach Indian Queens, turn off there heading for Newquay. A mile downn the road you then reach a roundabout, take the wadebridge turning 3rd exit. Travel 2 miles down that road you reach another roundabout again take the wadebridge turn, 3rd exit. Travel 1.5m down that road and take the second turning on the right sign posted for st columb major, the first turn is 3/4 mile. Once you turn off there take 2nd turn on the left sign posted tregamere then the cottage is 500 yards on the right. You may want to use the AA route planner or Google maps.
