P344 - New Barn
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
About a mile from St Issey on the Camel estuary side, a sturdy, 19th cent. detached cottage on a tiny no through lane with one neighbouring house and hedgerow meadows all around. About ½ mile of stream-crossing meadow footpath (don't forget torch/boots!) takes you to a pub (excellent children's play area), and about ½ mile of lane takes you to the Camel Trail (cycle/walkway to Padstow and Wadebridge along the estuary; fantastic for birdwatching). In front of the cottage, enclosed by a wall and five-bar gate, a mostly grassed garden with patio (picnic table, barbecue).
Inside, a very comfy, attractive home. Porch to front door into fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge-freezer) with slate floor, table/chairs; beamed living/dining room with woodburner, slate floor (rugs), TV/DVD. Stairs up to two bedrooms (footboards) – a double with 6' four-poster, and one with a double (5') plus single bed (terrific view); bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). A lovely quiet spot close to a great sailing/surfing area.

The West Country region
Cornwall's north coast: from the river Camel north to Bude and on to Morwenstow and the highest cliffs in the West Country, it is a mixture of great cliffs and beaches. Walking (coast path) and bird-friendly cliffs (usually no road near): peregrines possible. Great sand/surf beaches at Polzeath, Trebarwith, Widemouth Bay, Bude and Sandy Mouth; sandy coves at Port Gaverne, Bossiney, Crackington Haven, Duckpool, and others less accessible; Rock, also sandy, is the place for watersports, including sailing on the Camel estuary; very fine golf course (St Enodoc); mini-fjords at Port Quin and Boscastle. Port Isaac is very pretty round its cliff-enclosed harbour.
The well-worth-riding Camel Trail cycleway (bicycles for hire) follows the river Camel from Bodmin Moor to Padstow. Pencarrow is a beautiful house with wonderful garden. Tintagel has a ruined castle (King Arthur's?) on a wild headland. St Juliot church was restored by Thomas Hardy and 'a pair of blue eyes' nearly fell down a Crackington cliff. Bodmin Moor, its highest hills quite mountainous, is only a little way inland and Blisland, on its northern edge, is one of Cornwall's prettiest villages - makes a change from sea: so does lovely Lanhydrock (see Cornwall's 'Med'). Not far to Eden (see South Cornwall).
St Issey: village with pub 3 miles from Padstow and about 5 from the great sand/surf beaches around Trevose Head and cliff walking (Bedruthan Steps). Sailing and excellent golf (St Enodoc) at Rock, 10 miles. Petherick Creek, ½ mile (creek-side Camel Trail footpath to Padstow), and 2½ miles to the start of the Camel Trail at Padstow.
