The Kyrenia District
Northern Cyprus has a Mediterarrean aspect, although the months of November, December, January and February are cool and wet. March temperatures are similar to Spring temperatures in Great Britain, April is a lovely time of the year in Cyprus. Weather reports can be found on a BBC tourist website for information in detail. July and August are the hottest months when temperatures can reach 36 degrees centigrade and over.
It is an island of exceptional historical interest and beauty, and should be visited with all this in mind. You can visit many ruins of past abbeys, churches and monastries, noteably Bellapais Abbey built between 1158 and 1205, beautiful gothic architecture. Salamis Ruins near Famagusta is a good day trip, and go and visit a shipwreck, displayed in the Kyrenia Castle, thought to be the oldest shipwreck ever discovered, (around 300 BC). Mosaics and artefacts are on display, and olive oil pots from bygone days can be bought locally. Kelims are varied and interesting. Read Lawrence Durrell's "Bitter Lemons of Cyrpus" for an extra insight into life on the island in the 1950's and later after the Turkish intervention in 1974. Byzantine, Ottoman, British, Greek Roman and other influences in the island have enhanced it's fascinating past.
The Karpaz (panhandle going east) is also worth a day trip, visitng fishing villages en route on the newly tarred road, not much traffic. The wild donkeys and olive groves are also noteworthy. Oranges are grown in abundance, just perfect for your early morning juice.
Saint Hilarion Castle is probably named after a saint who escaped from Jerusalem after the Arab conquest, and moved to Cyprus in the 10th century.
Ozankoy area
The beaches, especially Turtle Beach, have local and biological interest, you can see the turtles in the evenings when the researchers are watching and monitoring them. Cyprus is a Muslim country so visitors are expected to respect the customs and Turkish is the spoken language. Mosques are numerous and usually a good landmark for meeting places.
The Harbour in Kyrenia is very beautiful and historically interesting. Much is written about the sea around the port of Kyrenia. Cafes, bars and restaurants are good alfresco places to meet friends and enjoy the local fish. Turkish Delight can be bought locally, and we suggest you try all the local sweet pastries. Try the "hellim" cheese and enjoy a mezze, then lamb kebabs followed by fruit and coffee. International cuisine is on offer in most places, and children are welcome usually, call to check this.
The shops and cafes are open late in the evenings in the summer and English language local newspapers advertise any festivals and promotions. There is a thriving British Community, and an Anglican Church in Kyrenia. Casinos, bars and restaurants are welcoming, phone to book a table. Info on places to eat is in the Villa Welcome Hand Book.
Driving is on the left as in Great Britain. Turkish drivers are not so careful at times! Some roads in the villages are very narrow and a bit lumpy, so drive slowly!
