The Central England / Cotswolds / Oxfordshire region

The Cotswolds stretch from Stratford upon Avon in the north to Bath in the south. From Gloucester in the west to Oxford in the east, the rolling hills are full of story book English villages. Then you can add Shakespeare at Stratford upon Avon, the dreaming spires and colleges at Oxford and the Georgian city of Bath. There is something different to do every day.

* Oxford - Dreaming spires, England's oldest university, the stunning architecture on Broad Street and the High Street, the covered market and the colleges.

* Woodstock - Famous for Blenheim Palace and Winston Churchill's grave, the village itself also has a lot of charm.
* Stratford upon Avon - The birthplace of William Shakespeare and the home of the Shakespeare Theatre.
* Chipping Campden - Perhaps the nicest of the Cotswold villages, as it is relatively unspoiled by the weight of modern tourism.
* Stow on the World - A busy small town, with a charming square and a range of shops.
* The Slaughters - The Cotswolds encapsulated, Upper and Lower Slaughter, with their manor houses and honey stone cottages.
* Burford - The town has a steep main street, with lots of antique shops, which runs down to the river and the ancient bridge
* Cirencester - The town has evolved from a Roman garrison town to a charming, well preserved market town.
* Bath - The Roman spa and the Georgian houses are the blend that attract tourists from all over the world

Oxford / Central Oxford area

Oxford University, founded in 1214, is the oldest and best university in Britain. Over 30 individual colleges make up the university, and each has become affiliated to the central university at different points in time from the 13th century up to today. There is no "campus" as such, but you will find a cluster of very beautiful historic buildings that are used by all the colleges - the Bodlean Library, the Radcliffe Camera, the Sheldonain Theatre, the Ashmolean Museum in the centre of Oxford. The individual colleges are scattered around the centre as well. Each college is protected by a high wall, which is entered through the porters lodge at the main gate. Once inside a veritable Pandora's Box opens up with courtyards and grass quadrangles, old buildings, the college chapel, its library, the students rooms. The only way to see what a college is like is to go inside a few.

There are walking tours of the colleges, and the open top busses go on a continual loop round the city (with your ticket you can get on and off at will) Go on one complete loop to get your bearings, then go round again getting on and off at those places and colleges that took your fancy.

The River is an important part of university life, particularly in the summer term. You get to the river by walking through Christ Church Meadow. The Oxford University Boat Race crew train here in the winter, in the summer, the less serious and more spectacular Summer Eights take place. On the River Cherwell, which joins the Thames at the boat houses, you can rent a punt and try your hand at poling up the picturesque narrow river, perhaps reaching a pub for a little refreshment!

Guestbook for Ethos Hotel

Quotes courtesy of Trip Advisor:

"We had a great stay at the Ethos Hotel, which is only 10 minutes walk from the centre of Oxford. The room had everything we needed, with a kitchenette (complete with breakfast basket, juice and milk), nice shower room, iPod speakers, Sky+ and flat-screen TV; the bed was huge and comfy, and the wardrobes were bigger than ours at home!"

"I booked this hotel as a surprise trip for my husband's 40th birthday. The hotel was ideally located as we were able to walk into the town for cappuccinos which we love to do. We did some lovely walks from the door too - it was nice not getting back in the car once we had parked it.

The room was great - very comfy and warm, we enjoyed the option to be able rustle up a simple meal in the room, and chill our Savignon blanc in the fridge! Breakfast was simple but ideal, it was nice not to have to queue up for a buffet.

We would happilly stay here again."

"Stayed for 3 nights in the Skyloft suite on a 3 night for 2 deal. On this basis, I thought it good value.

The location is good - 2 minutes to the Head of the River pub and river walks, close to town but on a quiet residential street.

The management are very pleasant and helpful, and the room was of a very high standard. Doesn't have the frills of a hotel - but then I consider that a positive. Also, free wireless broadband is a nice touch."

GUEST FROM MANCHESTER

"Very nice room, fresh trendy look, great king bed. Very well appointed good size bathroom.

The room and bathroom were super clean. Also appreciated that the hotel is situated on a quiet street, no traffic noise at all.

Just a short walk from shops and restaurants.

Would love to stay there again.

GUEST FROM FRANCE
______________________________________________________________________________________

"I've just returned from two nights stay at the Ethos Hotel, and would heartily recommend it.

The room (Deluxe) was modern in design and spotlessly clean, and the staff were chatty and welcoming. We had an enormous and very comfortable bed, and enjoyed the breakfast basket, large flat screen TV, i-pod dock and mini kitchen.

Compared to the other hotels we looked at in Oxford, this one can't be beaten for value. And I'd stay here again even if I suddenly won the lottery!

The hotel staff were so nice, and the room so appealing. Go!"

* Liked: Value for money, clean and fresh design, little touches like the breakfast basket.
* Disliked: Nothing!
