The Central England / Cotswolds / Oxfordshire region
The Cotswolds is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, famous for its distinctive landscape of gentle hills, hidden river valleys, and its delightful market towns and villages made of golden-coloured Cotswold stone. For many people, a Cotswold village represents the perfect English village, and the area is extremely popular with both the English and with visitors from abroad.
The Cotswolds offer wonderful gardens and manor houses and palaces to visit, the most famous being the incomparable Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, home of the Dukes of Marlborough since the 18th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also many sporting and arts festivals, historic and friendly country pubs for lunch, antique shops to visit and plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, riding and other outdoor activities. This area is a delightful holiday retreat at all times of year, not just the summer. The winter offers the pleasures of pub and restaurant meals in front of blazing log fires, in spring there are bluebells and spring lambs, and in autumn the colours are stunning.
Oxfordshire itself is one of England's most beautiful counties. To the north and west lie the Cotswolds, to the east are the stunning Chiltern Hills, and to the south lie the chalk North Wessex Downs. Rivers such as the Thames, the Windrush and the Evenlode wind through all parts of Oxfordshire, adding to its distinctive character. It is the most rural county in the South East region with over 50% of people in Oxfordshire living in small towns and villages. Its charming and historic market towns and the architectural splendour of Oxford city make Oxfordshire a popular tourist destination and a highly sought-after film and TV location.
It would be impossible to list all the places in Oxfordshire worth visiting, but obviously the city of Oxford ranks very high, as does the charming town of Henley in the south-east of the county, famous for the Royal Henley Regatta, one of the finest traditional English spectacles, with boats and marquees alont the River Thames and everyone dressed in their finery. The Cotswold town of Woodstock will be enjoyed by all visitors and is home to one of the greatest palaces in the world, Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Oxford / Woodstock area
Woodstock is 10kms from Oxford, a fifteen-minute drive by car and there is a good bus service. It is known as 'the gateway to the Cotswolds' because it is the first Cotswold village to be reached from the south, and beyond it lie all the delights of this lovely region of England.
Woodstock itself is a small town, in many ways more like a village, but with excellent amenities. It has shops of all types, from a supermarket, chemist and excellent butcher's, to exclusive clothes, gift and antique shops. It has several excellent and well-known hotels and many pubs and restaurants, as well as a historic Town Hall, a library and an outdoor swimming pool open in the summer months. Woodstock also offers all the attractions of the incomparable Blenheim Palace, with its beautiful park, gardens and lake.
How to get there
Woodstock is 7 miles north of Oxford and has excellent road and rail transport links. It can easily be reached from the M40, A40 and A34 roads. London Heathrow Airport is about 60 miles away and there is a regular coach service from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports to Oxford for guests who don't have a car. There is a regular bus service between Oxford and Woodstock and the journey takes about 20 minutes, with the bus stop a few minutes walk from Bowley House.
