The Central England / Cotswolds / Oxfordshire region

The Oxfordshire region of central England is deservedly popular with visitors as it offers a combination of stunning cities such as Oxford or Bath to visit, at the same time as some of England's most beautiful countryside, including the Cotswolds just to the north of Oxford.

The Cotswolds is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, famous for its distinctive landscape of gentle hills, hidden river valleys, and its delightful market towns and villages made of golden-coloured Cotswold stone. For many people, a Cotswold village represents the perfect English village, and the area is extremely popular with both the English and with visitors from abroad.

The Cotswolds offer wonderful gardens and manor houses and palaces to visit, the most famous being the incomparable Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, home of the Dukes of Marlborough since the 18th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also many sporting and arts festivals, historic and friendly country pubs for lunch, antique shops to visit and plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, riding and other outdoor activities. This area is a delightful holiday retreat at all times of year, not just the summer. The winter offers the pleasures of pub and restaurant meals in front of blazing log fires, in spring there are bluebells and spring lambs, and in autumn the colours are stunning.

Oxfordshire itself is one of England's most beautiful counties. To the north and west lie the Cotswolds, to the east are the stunning Chiltern Hills, and to the south lie the chalk North Wessex Downs. Rivers such as the Thames, the Windrush and the Evenlode wind through all parts of Oxfordshire, adding to its distinctive character. It is the most rural county in the South East region with over 50% of people in Oxfordshire living in small towns and villages. Its charming and historic market towns and the architectural splendour of Oxford city make Oxfordshire a popular tourist destination and a highly sought-after film and TV location.

It would be impossible to list all the places in Oxfordshire worth visiting, but obviously the city of Oxford ranks very high, as does the charming town of Henley in the south-east of the county, famous for the Royal Henley Regatta, one of the finest traditional English spectacles, with boats and marquees alont the River Thames and everyone dressed in their finery. The Cotswold town of Woodstock will be enjoyed by all visitors and is home to one of the greatest palaces in the world, Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Oxford / North Oxford area

Oxford, the poet Matthew Arnold's 'city of dreaming spires', is deservedly famous the world over for its history, its ancient university and its architectural splendour. Stunningly beautiful in its buildings, Oxford also enjoys outstanding natural beauty with its rivers, canals, parks and gardens all offering ideal places to walk, explore and relax.

Oxford is also a thoroughly modern university city with an exceptional range of cultural activities and entertainment, and, not least, a thriving academic and business centre.

North Oxford refers to the residential area which has grown up along the Woodstock and Banbury Roads out of Oxford. It is Oxford’s prime residential area, admired for its wide avenues and distinctive Victorian Gothic architecture. It contains a number of university buildings and colleges, and also beautiful green spaces such as the University Parks and Port Meadow. Bounded on one side by the River Cherwell and on the other by the Oxford Canal, this superb location is the first choice of university academics and professional people.

Summertown is part of North Oxford; it begins about 3kms north of the city centre and has its own small but excellent shopping and business centre where visitors can find everything they need in the way of shops, restaurants, bars, services and sports and leisure facilities.

North Oxford has excellent transport links, with very frequent buses to the city centre and university areas. Just to the north is the Oxford Ring Road connecting to the M40 for London and Birmingham, and the A34 for the south of England. A self-catering apartment in this area provides an ideal base for most visitors to the city, providing excellent easy access to the city from a safe, delightful residential area with its own range of facilities based around Summertown.

How to get there

Oxford has excellent road and rail transport links. It is 57 miles from London, with a direct coach service that runs every 10 minutes as well as a regular train service.
Oxford is 49 miles from Heathrow Airport and 78 miles from Gatwick Airport, with an excellent regular coach service to both.
You can also reach Oxford easily from Birmingham, Stansted and Luton Airports.
Once you are in Oxford, the apartment is 1.75km from the city centre and very easy to find on the main Banbury Road.
For visitors travelling by car the apartment is five minutes from the Oxford ring road which links to all routes.
