Woodstock, the Oxfordshire Market Town known as the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’ is 8 miles north of The City of Dreaming Spires, Oxford. It lies on a route between Shakespeare’s Stratford upon Avon 14 miles to the north and London 45 miles to the South East.
Woodstock not only boasts Cotswold vernacular architecture, with pretty tea shops, famous inns and Blenhiem Palace, a World Heritage site, the birth place of Winston Churchill. The palace is one of the best examples of the English baroque style commissioned for John Churchill the first Duke of Marlborough, designed by Sir John Vanburugh in 1704 with the palace park and gardens created by William (Capability) Brown.
The Blenheim Palace International horse Trials is in its 20th year of running and is now firmly established in the eventing calendar with the world's best riders as well as the thousands of spectators who come each year to watch the event.
One of the advantages of this Woodstock location are the frequent bus services to Oxford which link to travel services to the airports and London to the south and Chipping Norton and Stratford to the north. So you can manage easily without a car. Blenheim Palace and Park and the town centre are just a short walk away.
The Oxford / Woodstock area
The Cotswolds is an area of outstanding natural beauty, famous for its distinctive landscape of gentle hills, hidden river valleys, and its delightful market towns and villages made of golden-coloured Cotswold stone. For many people, a Cotswold village represents the perfect English village, and the makes the area a favourite choice as holiday destination.
The City of Dreaming Spires, Oxford‘s world famous University College buildings dominate the city centre. For over 800 years, it has been home to royalty and scholars. This mix of ancient and modern means there is always plenty to do, whether it’s visiting one of the many historic buildings of architectural significance such as the Examination Schools, The Sheldonian Theatre, the ancient college quads, Christchurch College for all those Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland fans, plus the museums, market stalls and shops or just enjoying a boat trip along the Thames or strolling by the riverbank or traditional punting on the River Cherwell.
The magnificent Ashmolean Museum, established in 1683, is the oldest museum in the Britian. Its collections of art and antiquities, which are of national and international importance range from the civilisations of ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome to Renaissance Europe and the 20th Century as well as an extensive Far Eastern collection.
