Vale da Cegonha consists of 20 acres of beautiful countryside and includes 2 houses, Casa Coruja which is a traditionally styled Alentejo farmstead and Casa Andorinha which is a delightful 1 bedroomed detatched cottage that is perfect for just a couple or a young family. The 2 houses are approximately 50 meters apart thus assuring plenty of space and privacy for everyone.

The cottage has a very large bedroom with king sized bed plus a single which will make up into bunks if required. Off the bedroom is a full bathroom with a corner bath with shower over, WC, washbasin and bidet.

The living room is open plan and is deceptively spacious. It includes a lounge area which will seat 4 guests in comfort, plus a dining table and 4 chairs. The kitchen area is fully equipped. It has a range of natural wood units with granite worktops and includes a hob, oven, microwave, fridge, toaster, blender and kettle.

Pation doors lead from both the living room and the bedroom on to a shady terrace which has a further table and chairs plus a charcoal barbeque. The patio enjoys fabulous views down the valley and is the ideal place to enjoy a romantic supper, washed down with a glass of excellent local wine, as the sun sets behind the hill. Afterwards you will be treated to a dazzling display of starlight. Gorgeous!

Vale da Cegonha also has a large 10x5 metre swimming pool which is shared between the 2 houses. From the cottage a pathway leads to the pool terrace where you will find a shady pergola and sun terrace with loungers. Just right for a hard day of relaxation!

The Alentejo region

The Alentejo is best described as Portugal's secret paradise. The real Portugal. Rolling hills, wide horizons and deep blue skies. A cross between the plains of Southern Africa and Provence.

It is home to a vast array of wildlife and birdlife including many magnificent birds of prey. Not forgetting of course the storks. Vale da Cegonha means 'Valley of the Storks' and they nest all around us from November until August.

The Alentejo has a long and traditional history and during the early summer months most towns and villages play host to fairs and country festivals which have changed little for generations. It is an oportunity for local people and visitors alike to gather and celebrate. The crops are all harvested, the years work is all done and there is excellent local wine to be enjoyed.

The long hot days of summer are a time for rest, relaxation and holidays before the work all begins again in the autumn.

Ourique itself is a typical small country town and there are many others nearby, each with their own character and well worth a visit. Beja and Evora both have Roman origins and Serpa is Medieval. It is also the home to one of the best cheesemaking producers is the country. Between Ourique and Beja you will find a number of vinyards where you can sample the excellent local wine as well as enjoying a traditional Alentejo lunch.

You can even enjoy a day quadbiking, horseriding or fishing nearby and if you fancy a day at the beach, you'll find one all to yourself on the beautiful west coast. Or why not spend a day with a picnic beside a lake. The Monte da Rocha lake can be seen from Vale da Cegonha and it offers total peace and tranquility as well as good fishing.
