The Connemara area of West Galway is particularly scenic with its changing colours throughout the year.
Oughterard is a village on Lough Corrib and is an ideal base to tour Connemara, Galway County and Galway City, Mayo and the Burren in County Clare. Lough Corrib is famous for its brown trout and salmon fishing and Oughterard is the main angling centre on the lake. Lough Corrib is 50 km long by 15 km wide at its widest point, and is the second largest lake in Ireland. The angling season open on Lough Corrib in mid-February and finishes in late-September and is at its busiest in May during the Mayfly season. Boats and boatmen can be hired locally. Golf and horse riding are also available locally. Other points of interest locally are the nearby 14th centuary Aughnanure Castle and 19th centuary Glangola Lead and Silver Mines, which are both open to the public.
