The Puglia/Molise region
Salento (Salentu in local dialect) is the south-eastern extremity of the Apulia region of Italy. It is a sub-peninsula of the main Italian peninsula, sometimes described as the "heel" of the Italian "boot"and is a rock of limestone dividing the Adriatic Sea from the Ionian Sea.
Salento is a peaceful land full of history and traditions whose strong points are its natural and architectural beauties, its hospitality, its magic atmosphere, its several wonders to discover, its warm sun, its blue sky, its crystal sea and its dreamlike coast.
A number of places, the coasts above all, are remarkable landscapes and environments, among them the Alimini Lakes (2 minutes drive), on the Adriatic coast, and Porto Selvaggio (30 minutes drive), on the Ionic coast. The soil is very fertile, some of the finest olive trees and grapes grow here, and their products are exported worldwide.
Salento's coasts are varied, and can be sandy or rocky, but all boast pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Some of the most renowned locations in Salento for summer holidays (from May/June to September) are: - Torre dell'Orso - Otranto (10 minutes drive) - Castro (25 minutes drive) - Santa Cesarea Terme (20 minutes drive) - Santa Maria di Leuca (50 minutes drive) - Ugento (40 minutes drive) - Porto Cesareo (40 minutes drive) - Gallipoli (30 minutes drive)
Otranto / Torre dell'Orso area
Torre dell'Orso is a small village on the Adriatic coast very close to all other tourist areas of Salento.
There is so much to see and do: - a number of historical centres (Lecce, the fortified towns of Otranto and Acaja) medieval castles and ancient Roman sighting tower alng the entire coast - a number of clubs and beach bars to enjoy night life - golf club (10 minutes drive) - horse back riding - go-kart - water sports activities in Alimini (2 minutes drive) including surf, wind surf, kite surf, jet ski, water ski etc..
During you stay you may enjoy some of the finest and reasonably priced foods and wines in the country.
How to get there
Brindisi is the closest airport to Torre dell'Orso. All Italian airlines, including budget airlines (i.e. Ryan Air, Volare Web and My Air) reach Brindisi essentially from Milan and Rome.
Brindisi may also be reached directly from London with Ryan Air. Once you reach Brindisi airport, Torre dell'Orso may be reached by car (all car hires are available) or by private or public transportation. A lot of private companies provide transportation services from Brindisi to any town within Salento region (please contact owner for any additional information in this respect).
Another bigger airport is located in Bari.
