About the home

This delightful apartment is on the 2nd floor and is suitable for either couples or a small family.

It consists of 2 bedrooms, a bathroom (with bath & overhead shower), a separate kitchen and a spacious lounge.
The 2nd bedroom has a single bed which extends to a double bed and the lounge has 2 sofa beds.

There is a long balcony where you can relax in the afternoon sun and then enjoy the evening sunsets with a glass of fine Salento wine.

The apartment is fully furnished with a well equipped kitchen and there are 3 supermarkets within 10/15 mins walk or 2/3 mins by car.
There are also 'pescherie' within easy reach where you can buy freshly caught local fish.

The Puglia/Molise region

Paces of interest to visit from Otranto are Lecce, Gallipoli, Matera, Ostuni and Alberobello.

Lecce "The Florence of the South" is 45km inland from Otranto and is enriched with many examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, together with the ruins of a Roman theatre and amphitheatre.

South of Otranto you will find Santa Cesarea and Castro and more beaches and coves dotted along the stunning coastline until you reach Santa Maria di Leuca (the tip of the 'heel' of Italy).

To the north of Otranto is Alimini, which has both a large fresh water lake suitable for walks and picnics and also a long sandy beach which offers various watersports in the summer months.

If you venture further north again to visit the 'Trulli' houses in and around Alberobello, another main attraction in this area is the Castellana Caves which are well worth a visit.

The Otranto area

Otranto lies on the Adriatic (Salento) coast and is the most easterly town in Italy.

It is steeped in history and has been influenced by the Turks, Crusaders, Byzantines and Normans.

It has an 11th century cathedral with a vast mosaic floor depicting 'the Tree of Life' and a crypt below with more than 40 columns.
The cathedral chapel holds the skulls and bones of the 800 martyrs of Otranto who were slain by the Turks for their Christian beliefs.

Otranto has an impressive Argonese castle and a charming walled historic quarter where you can meander through its many narrow cobbled streets. Here you will find bars and restaurants tucked away, where you can try out the local dishes and wines.

Visiting Masserie and Agriturismos in the countryside around Otranto is another great way to experience traditional home grown cuisine.

There are weekday markets held in various nearby towns selling a variety of items from clothes, shoes, pottery and household items.
Otranto market is on Wednesday morning with a much bigger one in Maglie held on Saturday mornings.

There are many local festivals celebrated in the summer months in Otranto and its neighbouring towns.

For Go-Kart enthusiasts, the La Conca circuit is only 10k from Otranto.

Ryanair fly direct to Bari and Brindisi and also via Milan (Bergamo) and other Italian cities.
British Airways fly direct to Bari from April - October.

Other airlines which fly to Bari and Brindisi from the UK via Milan or Rome include Easyjet and Alitalia.
There are also other airlines which fly from European cities to Bari and Brindisi.

Brindisi Airport is approx 1 hours drive from Otranto whilst Bari Airport is just over 2 hours.

Hiring a car is advisable and can be prebooked at both these airports with Hertz, Avis, Europcar, National and Maggiore etc.

Buses and trains are available from Brindisi to Otranto via Lecce and Maglie, for those wishing to take public transport.

Alternatively a private transfer from Brindisi to Otranto can be arranged on request.

“Fantastic apartment in a beautiful setting!!” This is the second time we have stayed in this apartment, we find it clean, comfortable and set in a perfect location within Otranto. The apartment is spacious inside with all the facilities you require, comfortable king size bed, good sized family bathroom, the kitchen was equiped to enable us to cook some great italian dishes and to top it off a great size balcony to sit and enjoy our Spaghetti Vongole and a fantastic puglian red wine!! The beach is only a 5 minute walk, We recommend the Lounge beach for the music and the great italian atmosphere!! So many places to visit when you are there, over the last 2 years we have visited Lecce, Gallipolli (word of advice dont drive into the old town or you will get a fine!!) but do not miss it. Porto Cessara is worth a visit to go across to Rabbit Island. Alimini beach is a short drive away and well worth going to. If you are wanting a true Italian holiday, then this is the place for you, strutting the Passeggiare with the tastiest gelato in hand!!!
