The Puglia/Molise region

Puglia officially gets more sunshine than any other region in Italy, thus extending the holiday season from Easter until the end of October. The climate is typically Mediterranean with dry heat in summer and mild in winter.
The Puglia region is famous for its blue skies, rolling sandy beaches, exquisite food and wines, amazing architecture and general laid-back lifestyle.
Puglia borders two seas, the Adriatic and the Ionian, and provides 80 per cent of Italy’s olive oil.
The fertile red soil, dry stone walls and warm climate give this area a distinctly 'eastern' flavour, where the trulli houses look like pointy hats.
Far from being dry and arid this narrow peninsular grows some of the best produce in Italy due to the water retentive soil. There are local wine cooperatives at Locorotondo (vino blanca) and Martina Franca (vino rosso) but you will also find small local wine producers where you can buy wine on the side of the road. You will love the wine but you will also love the price!
The Ostuni area
There are a variety of historic Puglian towns and cities to visit, small fishing hamlets or beaches to explore, many under-developed or somewhere you hire a lounger and sun umbrella. Here are some suggestions.
Ostuni
From the terrace of your villa you will see Ostuni. The old town is a citadel, built on the top of a hill and still fortified with the ancient walls. With its typically white-painted architecture, Ostuni is commonly referred to as "the White City” ("La Città Bianca") The old town is a maze of cobbled streets with delights around every corner. Fresh fish shops are plentiful with the best of the days catch and open late into the evening. Depending on time of day, you can eat or drink in any number of cool bars and enjoy some of the region’s finest restaurants. Or simply sit in the main piazza and watch the world go by with coffee or an ice cream. The ultratrendy Ricardo’s bar is a good place to watch the world go by. Each year a three day festival is held in the name of the city’s patron saint, Saint Oronzo, from the 25th to the 27th of August.
The market
The market is held every Saturday morning in the new town and is fabulous for meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. There are a huge number of stalls for clothing, shoes, fabrics etc. Discover how fruit and veg are meant to taste! Have a load up of meat, fish and salads and take home for a BBQ. On the second Sunday of the month there is also an antiques market in the centre of Ostuni.
The coast
The coast is lovely, with long stretches of clean sandy beaches and turquoise seas, interspersed by Greek-style rocky coves. We love to spend a typical Italian day at the sea, hiring a sun lounger and umbrella and having a fabulous value fresh-fish and wine lunch on the beach. If you prefer a more natural day at the seaside there are numerous unspoilt bays and sea-walks alongside this part of the Adriatic coast, dotted with medieval towers.
Ceglie Messapica
A short drive from your villa is the authentic hill town of Ceglie Messapica which is a beautiful place to wander around with a gastronomic reputation and some of the finest restaurants around, including one which boasts a Michelin star.
Day Trips
It is impossible in one holiday to see everything the region has to offer. Within a 90-minute drive of your
villa are the port cities of Bari and Brindisi, the architectural delights of Gallipoli and Lecce, the Ionian coast; the original “trulli town” of Alberobello; the pretty historic fishing village of Polignano with bars built into the cliffs; or even visit a Safari Park at nearby Fasano.
Cisternino
20 minutes away, Cisternino is a lovely place to wander around with a pretty pedestrianised historic centre and lovely little central piazza lined with cafes and bars. On Sundays in August they have free lunchtime classical concerts in the square. Also Cisternino is unique for its butcher/restaurants. You choose your cut at the counter and they cook it for you in the wood-fired oven.
Martina Franca
Around 30 minutes drive from your Villa, Martina Franca is a beautiful baroque town with a wide range of shopping facilities, bars and restaurants - wonderful for an evening passegiata followed by dinner in the square.
Monopoli
This is one of our favourite places - a 35 minute drive from the villa - Monopoli is a seaside gem with fabulous fish restaurants and delightful old fashioned outdoor cafe's, a beautiful old port, atmospheric winding streets and great shops and boutiques dotted around the town. Not in the tourist guides but definitely worth a visit.
Golf/spa
If you want to play golf there is a seaside 18-hole championship course about 30 mins away called Masseria San Domenico or a 9 hole called Masseria Torre Coccaro. Both have spa, pools and restaurants and visitors can hire clubs.

Nearest airport and personal favourite is Brindisi (about 30 minutes drive). Next best thing is Bari which is about an hour away. You can fly to Naples or Pescara and then drive (about 3-4 hours) or Rome (4-5 hours).
Best choice of direct cheap flights are Ryanair to Brindisi or Bari.
You can also fly with Alitalia who fly to Brindisi or Bari (stop off at Rome or Milan for about an hour). The flight times can be kinder, the flights cheaper and they depart from Heathrow.
British Airways fly from Gatwick to Bari.

My young family and I went for a May break and we really fell in love with the area. The house is simple, clean and comfortable. and there were ample toys to keep my 2 little ones entertained. May weather is perfect, as its sunny but not too hot. So we did lots of beach and walking, and eating! we spent hours on the Veranda, mainly catching the sun and reading. The town was easily accessible, and we enjoyed shopping around getting the daily bread/fruit and meat, and wine! A really chilled out break, basically ideal for relaxing and enjoying the South Italian Dolce Vita |
