The Puglia/Molise region
The Valle D’Itria region of Puglia is famous for its unique ancient Trulli buildings. Crafted from stone, these amazing ancient stone structures have now mostly been renovated to provide stunning rural accommodation. The walls are a metre or more thick, to keep their inhabitants cool in the summer and warm in the winter beneath their airy domed ceilings.
Ostuni area
Throughout the year there are numerous festivals and fireworks displays. La Cavalcata, in Ostuni is an amazing horse parade that follows the procession of Saint Oronzo, the patron saint/protector of the city of Ostuni- this is towards the end of August. There really are too many places to mention but other towns to see are Alberobello, the home of the Trulli, the Castellano caves, Lecce and Martina Franca.
The coastline is 10 minutes away and whether driving south or north there is access to the coastline and beaches to cater for all, from rocky secluded coves to sandy, and from quiet to busy. Torre Guaceta is a nearby stretch of coastline officially recognised as a nature reserve and is very beautiful.
For families the Zoo Safari combined with funfair and shows at Fasano, ten pin bowling/amusement park near Ostuni and in Monopoli there is a children's indoor play centre
Ostuni is a truly stunning medieval hill-top white city, offering some of the best cuisine in Italy! It is a very vibrant city with a huge weekly market and the friendliest locals in all of Italy. Even during peak season, it remains very Italian and unspoilt. This is the place where the Italians themselves like to take their holidays! The villa is just over 10 minutes drive away from the stunning Ionian coastline - 500 miles of white sandy beaches. The nearest beach is the best family beach in the area, complete with fantastic, beach restaurant (very cheap, fantastic fish!)There are plenty of places to visit from the stunning World Heritage site, Alberobello (trulli town), to the beautiful city of Lecce (the Florence of the South!). For the children there is the fantastic Fasanoland Zoo Safari and Theme park plus the chance to be at one with nature.
Must sees… In Ostuni, the best time for sight-seeing during summer is around 5pm, this is when the temperature begins to drop a little and the locals dress up and come out to take their 'passegiata'.
Centro Storico, Ostuni – you can just walk and walk. Every corner you turn holds another breathtaking view. Simply Stunning. Our favourite church is next to the town hall in the main Piazza, the ancient Cathedral at the very top of the hill is absolutely amazing, it is well worth the walk to the top of the old town to see this, the ancient architecture and breathtaking views of the nearby Ionian coastline.
The following towns are all a short drive from Ostuni, and also well worth a visit :-
Martina Franca- The road to martina is a lovely drive – full of Trulli and Masserie. Martina itself is a Baroque jewel -extremely elegant, historic and well worth a visit. Cisternino / Ceglie Mesapica – these are pretty towns with lots of character, ancient defensive forts on the hills and well-kept old-town areas. Alberobello – Listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site, a must see while you are here. Alberobello is truly the home of the trulli!! It is a good idea to combine a visit to Alberobello with a trip to the fascinating Castellano caves nearby.
Lecce is about a 45 minutes drive away. It is known as the Florence of the South - you will see why! Lecce has amazing ancient Baroque architecture and a quaint old town. There are fantastic shops, restaurants and bars and the university to see.
Gargano peninsula – This is a longer drive, North of Bari. You will need to set off early, but once you are there you will see some of the most stunning coastline and country-side you have ever seen in your life. Regarded by many as the loveliest place in Italy.
Egnazia – this is an Ancient Roman port of Greek origin. There are Extensive ruins and also a fascinating museum. Also look out for the many Dolmens – these are ancient Bronze age stones dotted about the region.
Markets
Every Saturday morning there is a fantastic market in Ostuni which sells everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, meats and local cheeses to clothes and furniture. On the second Sunday of each month, there is an antiques market around the old walls of the Centro storico. There are also great markets in local towns on other days of the week somewhere or other around, you just need to explore them!
How to get there
Low cost airlines such as www.ryanair.co.uk make travelling to Italy easy. In fact Ryanair fly direct to Brindisi, the local airport to the villa (30 minutes drive away) and Bari (1 hours drive) every day alternating the above 2 airports. From London Stansted the flight time is 2.5 hours.
You do however have many options and choices of flying to Brindisi or Bari airport, some of which will have a short stop in either Milan Linate or Milan Malpensa or Rome or Rome Fiumicino before coming down to our local airports. (nb both Milan and Rome have 2 airports make sure you match you connections to the right airport). Easy Jet - www.easyjet.com fly for Milan to Bari and also fly from most parts of the UK into both Naples and Rome and another option is flying into Naples and driving 4 great scenic hours or even drive from Rome which takes 6 hours.
Various airlines including Airone (www.flyairone.it) operate the short flights from Milan or Rome down to Bari and Brindisi Airports. www.Alitalia.com is the Italian airline and they connect from all over Europe.
Car Hire: Car hire is really easy at both airports and the car quality is excellent (not battered and worn out) you can easily hire and return back to different airports. We find it cheaper to book before you leave and the price reflects what time of year you go. Auto Europa and Sicily By Car are inexpensive. EasyJet or Ryanair car hire- booked on their website even if you don't fly with them - offer cheap rates for a larger car. All the major car companies Avis, National, Alamo...... hire small cars up to minivans.
You will need a car for this holiday in order to take advantage of the miles of empty roads, taking you through some of Italy's most beautiful scenery, historic hamlets, villages, towns and cities and of course driving the 10 mins down to the beach.
