The Puglia/Molise region
Puglia has been described as the new Tuscany. More people are now hearing about this area that has up to now been Italy's best-kept secret. It is situated on the Heel of Italy's famous boot and as the 'Garden of Italy' it supplies most of Italy's food - wheat for pasta, mozarella cheese etc - and some of the best wines too! (Try Negro and Primitivo red wines). Wine is also amazingly cheap in the Entoteca’s (wine shops) and supermarkets. Puglian cuisine is also a nice surprise for the uninitiated - try the wonderful antipasta dishes that just keep on coming and feature tasty vegetarian as well as meat and fish dishes. Puglia boasts lots of amazing sights, including the medieval Castel del Monte and trulli town, Alberobello (the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Puglia), plus the WWF protected natural reserve at Torre Guaceto. Culturally, the area is rich too. Lecce is known as the Florence of the South with beautiful architecture and Martina Franca's opera festival rivals any that Italy has to offer. Beaches are blue flag and lovely - we recommend Bosco Verde beach along the Pilone sand dunes stretch and resorts with more activities and restaurants include Villanova and Torre Sabina.
Ostuni area
Both Carovigno and Ostuni are ancient sister towns with fascinating Centro Storicos, offering summer late-night outdoor entertainment - but Ostuni is the one famed abroad, while Carovigno retains its authentic Italian charm and slow-paced lifestyle - a good antidote to the bustle and business of Ostuni at the height of the season, and conveniently only minutes away by car.
Ostuni is described in The Rough Guide (Italy) as "one of the most stunning small towns of southern Italy", "a gleaming white splash of sun-bleached streets and cobbled alleyways".
In Lonely Planet Ostuni is a "stunning town of stark, whitewashed buildings ...recalls a North African Arab medina" ...." its maze of tightly packed streets twisting around a dramatic 15th century cathedral encircled by medieval ramparts. It is the most popular Murgia town, mainly due to its proximity to the coast. In recent years it has become devilishly chic, and has the best after dark scene in the region”.
Chic restaurants and bars abound - often chanced upon while wandering the tiny little winding streets of the Centro Storico districts. Watch out for wonderful festas in all the local towns with fireworks and music and stalls. Check out the antiques markets and regular weekly markets.
How to get there
Cheap flights from London are with Ryanair from Stansted to Brindisi (approx 20 mins drive) or Bari (approx 50 mins drive). Worth checking out British Airways and Alitalia for offers as they also fly to Bari. Or you can fly to Naples and drive over in 3 hours (Rome is about 5 hours drive away). If flying with Ryanair discounted car hire is offered by Hertz. Otherwise Europcar, Avis, National, Maggiore, Sixt and Targarent also have rental outlets at the airports. You can get a train to Ostuni from either airport and get a taxi to the property from the station, but it might be more straightforward to get a taxi direct (apx 50 Euros from Brindisi). Alternatively we can meet you - a pick-up and transfer can be arranged from either airport.

Further details indoors: As well as a magnificent vaulted stellar stone ceiling in the living room, Casa di Sogni has beautiful stone-coloured porcelain tiled floors, a brand new fully-fitted kitchen (with proper stove and washing machine), bathroom and attractive furniture. There are two double bedrooms, both with arched, character ceilings. A balcony with views of the piazza for cocktails al fresco and a large roof terrace with sophisticated sun loungers, sea views and a barbecue complete the picture. It is ideal for either town/city breaks or for sun/sea and sightseeing holidays.
Further details outdoors: Ostuni's busy nightlife and bustly Saturday morning market is just 10 minutes drive and the nearest beach resort of Torre Sabina is even closer (an easy drive through the olive groves) and boasts lively waterside restaurants overlooking blue flag white sandy beaches. Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve, where sea turtles thrive in a protected environment amid glorious unspoilt coves and crystal clear waters, is just a little further down the coast. After action-packed days out you will be delighted to return to the charms of laid-back Carovigno with its easy slow-paced life-style- the perfect place to relax and unwind at any time of the year.

"It's a lovely town - it is really authentic - I particularly liked the church bells ringing out the time. You have all the amenities, restaurants and bars around the corner. The house is fabulous, very spacious and full of light. We had a great time," Ailis Regan, visitor July 2008
