The Puglia/Molise region
This long strip of land that forms the heel of the Italian “boot” is home to a few hundred kilometres of warm and sunny beaches.
The plains that make up the rest of the countryside contains crops which includes olives, figs, grapes, almonds, tobacco and livestock. Nearly 10% of all the wine in Europe comes from Puglia, though much of it is used to blend with wines from elsewhere. Nowadays PUGLIA has established a notable reputation for the high quality of the wine produced and for the most delicious extra virgin olive oil, confirming also that here is where the MEDITERRANEAN DIET has the most well rooted origins. Chefs of international fame have come to experience and capture the essence of this land. Made up of six provinces that share two coastlines namely the ADRIATICA and IONICA, the region contains archaeological evidence of the oldest settlements on the Italian mainland, going back over 3,000 years. Archaeological museum and sites are amongst the best in ITALY and yet seldom visited.
Temperatures can get quite high here in the summer, It is also mild in the winter and is a popular spring and autumn destination for tourists.
Ostuni area
The town is a treasure trove of architectural styles of different periods, this makes OSTUNI a very good candidate for a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE, a long overdue award. Known as LA CITTA' BIANCA "the white city", Ostuni boasts many restaurants and bars and a local market. OSTUNI is ideally situated, with a commanding position on a hillside, a crossroad to other towns and other places of interest, and has easy access to many sites. Clean country air and beautiful surroundings makes this area a favourite with Italians. On a lighter note and hope to make you smile,OSTUNI why is it called the WHITE CITY ??? Because most of the houses in the old town ,the"CENTRO STORICO",are white-washed in lime,"not the fruit but the stone" this is done following an ancient tradition in the belief it prevents all sort of disasters and diseases from the plague to scurvie. Noticeably the grander building such as the Cattedral, the Town Hall and the Aristocratic Palazzo's are not white-washed so.......beware.
