Home description
The Masseria Palombara Grande takes its name from the Apulian word ‘palombaio’ or ‘dovecot’. This is a small construction divided into various compartments, where white doves nested, and still nest to this day. It was built in 1776 above an ancient underground oil press, at the heart of an olive plantation, now centuries-old. It is situated in the Ostuni Marina (part of the territory which extends from the hills near to Ostuni out into the Adriatic Sea).
The entire structure is made of tufaceous rock and stone, and is whitewashed similarly to the walls found in and around Ostuni. At the centre of the property stand the estate owner’s quarters, which are located directly next to the stables. Through the stables it is possible to access the oil press and the small rural church built in 1789.
The surrounding 30 hectares of land is mainly dedicated to olive cultivation, yet, it is also possible to see blueberry bushes and Mediterranean maquis shrubs dotting the property.

The Puglia/Molise region
Puglia, or Apulia as it is called in English, is Italy's boot heel, its southeastern most region. Gateway to and from the East, it has been conquered by legions of foreign rulers. It is the Italian region with the highest concentration of dolmens and standing stones. Frederick II (1194-1250), the last Emperor of the Hohenstaufen line built many castles which still grace the region.
With acres and acres of vineyards and olive groves, Apulia produces one-tenth of the wine drunk in Europe; its olive oil is renowned. Wine and oil perfectly complement the super-fresh seafood and vegetables that are the staples of la tavola pugliese.
Apulia offers a host of cathedrals dating back to the 10th century, several deserted - and thus highly atmospheric - Greek and Roman ruins, a gleaming necklace of lively fishing villages, one of Europe's largest forests and a chain of medieval hilltowns. It also has its own subspecies of architecture, called barocco leccese. Characterized by extremely ornate carvings that cover the entire surface of churches and palazzi, its apex is reached in the delightful city of Lecce.
There is one other attraction that you will see only in Apulia, and that are the 'trulli': whitewashed cones made of stones held together without mortar, they are visible in almost every wheat field and olive grove, where they serve as miniature barns. Alberobello, a town formed by clustered together in the hundreds, is a wonderful site to visit. Ostuni is one of the most stunning cities in southern Italy famous for the dazzling effect of its whitewashed houses. It is a genuine and charming example of Mediterranean architecture. Amongst the architectural beauty and the centuries-old olive groves, in Apulia you enjoy some of the very cleanest beaches and water in the Mediterranean.
Ostuni / Marina d'Ostuni area
Ostuni is reputed an architectural jewel, and is commonly referred to as "the White Town" ("La Città Bianca", in Italian) for its white walls and its typically white-painted architecture. A monument on its own, the town's largest buildings are the Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace, alongside with a few palazzi of some of the aristocratic families of the region: Aurisicchio, Ayroldi, Bisantizzi, Falghieri, Ghionda, Giovine, Jurleo, Marseglia, Moro, Palmieri, Petrarolo, Siccoda, Urselli, Zaccaria.
The city of Ostuni is a series of levels, staircases, small roads, alleys, arches. Hints of the Middle Ages are at hand in every corner, in every view to the sea, in the portal of a palace, in the walls of a convent or the front of a church.
The brightness of its whitewashed houses, set against the pink-tinged brown of its principal monument, makes the town stand out in the green of the surrounding area. This happy combination of the natural and the manmade has made Ostuni one of the most attractive cities in the region and an essential part of any tour of Italy.
The Masseria Palombara Grande is situated in central Apulia, 1 Km from the Adriatic Sea and its splendid beaches - Rosa Marina, Lido Bosco Verde, Pilone, Torre Pozzelle (the 2 lattest ones are towers built along the shoreline, in order to prevent eventual attacks from the Turks controlling the Balkans) - and 4 km from the city of Ostuni.
Its central location means that it is very easy to reach other tourist destinations such as Alberobello, Cisternino, Lecce, Salento, Gallipoli, Santa Maria di Leuca and Otranto.
