Home description
The house is an old building in the mediaeval centre of Ostuni, but is completely modern inside. The front door is in a quiet lane with no through traffic: there is a restaurant just around the corner in the Cathedral Piazza and a cafe almost opposite. The bright living/dining area (on the 1st floor) retains high vaulted ceilings: the living area, with double divan-bed, can be closed off for sleeping and has a shower-room/toilet adjoining. The compact modern kitchen opens off the dining area. On the 2nd floor is the master bedroom and a smaller double: there is also a bathroom. From this floor there is access to the sheltered balcony (outlook to S&W) with its large barbecue, table & chairs: an exterior stair leads to the roof terrace, open to every Summer breeze and giving a panoramic view unequalled in Ostuni. Next door is a beautful courtyard with a large palm-tree. The house is ideal for a walking/eating/drinking city break, with most of the city's restaurants no more than 10 minutes walk : the lanes of the historic centre are ideal for leisurely exploration. We recommend a car if travel beyond Ostuni is planned, but it is not essential: the city has plenty to occupy the visitor for a week or more. We've been going there for 21 years and always find something new.

The Puglia/Molise region
Besides good weather (normally!), Puglia is blessed with good wine, excellent food, a long coast and fascinating towns. Wine production - mostly red - focusses on the Salento (the "heel" of Italy), tho' Locorotondo is noted for white wine. The best way to buy is at one of the many Cantine (wineries). Among the many towns worth a visit are Polignano & Monopoli (both by the sea) to the North, Cisternino & Alberobello (trulli) to the N-W, Taranto (National Museum) to S and Brindisi, Lecce (Baroque splendour), Otranto (Cathedral, Castle: by the sea) & Gallipoli (by the sea: intriguing historic centre) to S-E: we also rate the historic centre of Bari (the adjoining commercial centre will be of interest to shoppers). Get to know Ostuni first, tho'.
Ostuni / Ostuni Centre area
Ostuni is full of interest. Most obvious attraction is the surrounding mediaeval Historic Centre, with its 15-century Cathedral, nearby Museum of Pre-Classical Culture (in a fine Baroque ex-church) and network of lanes. Viewpoints in the Centre give expansive vistas across olive-groves to the Adriatic Sea. However, the somewhat newer areas on the other side of the Piazza, extending up around the Park, also have many fascinating streets and buildings. The Centre and the area round the Piazza have most restaurants & bars. You will eat well in any restaurant, but Odissea & Casa San Giacomo have impressed us lately: among bars, we recommend Enoteca Divino (Puglian wines - opens lateish!) & Lo Zac (beers) - among cafes, our near neighbour plus the Bar dell' Villa. The main festival is the cavalcade of Sant' Oronzo (26th August ): the Good Friday procession is also most impressive. There are street events during the tourist season. The nearest of several beaches is at Villanova (10km - correct distance!) which has a boating harbour, bars and places to eat: there is a bus service. A similar distance in the opposite direction is the town of Ceglie Messapica which has an extensive historic centre with a castle.
