Trullo di Maria
About the home
We rent this "iced" trullo for tourist stays (minimum stay: three days). Locals call "iced" a trullo when their cones are fully covered with plaster, so its external aspect appears completely whitewashed. This is not an ancient tradition but a recent method introduced as a fast way to preserve the existing structure made by dry-stones. This is a common habit that changed the image of our countries in the last decades: more than 50% of the local trulli are now spotting the red-and-green countryside with their charming white cones.
The trullo is detached from other close buildings and surrounded by a beautiful countriside spotted by olive groves and almond trees. Despite of this fact it is located at walking distance from the village of San Michele Salentino where it is possible to enjoy the summer animation by night and buy all the necessary. The trullo offers a wide courtyard with a secular mulberry, which is the true core of the place: beneath the tree there is a large table: a perfect and shadowed place where to spend relaxing moments or sampling the excellent meat at the barbeque of local breeding (San Michele and Cisternino are the best places to buy good meat in Apulia).

Further details indoors:
Two portions compose the built dwelling: the first one is the historic settlement, the Trullo, all made by dry stones with four original cones. For its particular shape and due to its historic relevance it surely represents the most charming part of the complex. Inside of it you will find a central room. On the back, under another smaller dome, there is a bedroom with a double bed. On the right side there is an “alcove” equipped with another double bed and separated from the rest of the trullo by a heavy tent. On the left side there is the ancient "focarile": the place once was used to prepare the simple meals for the peasants: nowadays the fireplace can be used for lighting an ornamental fire. A modern kitchen and bathroom are located in the other unit. At any rate, to face promptly some needs, there is an always-ready fridge.
The second portion has the generic name of “Lamia”. Despite the name evokes the Greek mythological female creature, in the local vocabulary it means only a small squared building normally integrated in a trullo-complex. Its modern appearance is simple and sober and absolutely does not disturb the full vision of the beautiful traditional trullo. There is bedroom for two people, a living room with a well-equipped modern kitchen, with a four-ring stove, traditional oven and microwave oven. In the same room there is a table, a sofa bed, the fireplace and the door leading to the bathroom. It is equipped with shower, wc, bidet, washbasin, washing machine. It has also a door facing to the courtyard so that also the guests sleeping in the trullo may have access to the bathroom without disturbing people staying in the living room of the Lamia. It seems quite uncomfortable a bathroom with an access from the courtyard but during summertime or warm seasons the perception of an internal or external part is more indefinite so that the wide courtyard with the secular mulberry and its table may be considered as the best “room” of the complex. We rent the entire complex exclusively to only one party at the time and our guests will have access to both the sub-units indifferently.
Further details outdoors:
The building was once used only by the local peasants and recently by Maria's family. Its shapes are appreciated by the entire world and are representative of this Italian region and its ancient culture. This area of Apulia is becoming a new Chianti, a place where the nature fuses its beauty into the controlled, quiet human environment.
Further details
Linen and towels are available into the Trullo as the whole housing equipment.

Conditions
We recommend also some beautiful accommodations in Venice, Florence, Bologna and Marche. This may help you to plan your holiday in all these cities.
Trullo di Maria has not a swimming pool; it is absolutely genuine; all the context calls for a standard of living simple and faithful to the local traditions. If a swimming pool is a fundamental requirement, please check availability in our other Trullo della Luna. Consider that guests of Maria's trullo are welcome for free to the swimming pool (11x 5 ml) at Trullo della Luna (about 8 Km from Trullo di Maria) if the booking is coordinated, for instance, by two families vacationing together.

The Puglia/Molise region

In the "Location and amenities" section of our web site you will find a series of suggested places to visit during your holiday in "Trullo di Maria" or in our other "Trullo della Luna". You'll see all the descriptions are based on our direct experiences and reflect our familiar approach to the areas.
Briefly though it is well worth visiting the city of Matera with its abandoned old town, which is included by UNESCO in its World Heritage Sites. Or Alberobello, considered the quaintest town in Italy, it consists almost entirely of trulli (over a thousand of them); a series of urban quarters entirely full filled by neatly whitewashed houses with conical roofs, made of superimposed dry-stone blocks.
Approximately 20 km from the trullo there is the Natural Reserve of Torre Guaceto, a stretch of uncontaminated coast with beautiful small beaches of crystal clear waters. The park extends itself for approximately 1,000 hectares of land and 2,000 hectares of sea including about seven kilometres of uncontaminated small bays of golden sand alternated with beautiful headlands. Here you can go bike riding, snorkelling, sailing or just soak up the incredible atmosphere.
Other places of interest include the beautiful village of Grottaglie, famous for the handmade ceramic products. Or the caves of Grotte di Castellana and Fasano Wildlife Park- ideal family day trips! The small round village, Locorotondo, made by whitewashed buildings with plenty of small shops and restaurants also makes for an interesting day out- be sure to try the local wine!
The Ostuni / San Michele Salentino area
A more confidential area of our private website contains all the tips for restaurants, shops and all the useful instructions for your stay in our trulli (trulli is plural, trullo is the singular name) and nearby resources.
Ostuni is situated on three hills at the edge of the Murge, a short distance away from the Adriatic coast and few kilometers from the trullo. The medieval village is clustered on one of the three hills and stands with its whitewashed facade over a limestone cliff. Thus Ostuni is called also "the white town". We suggest visiting this town when the sky is particularly clear or even when a thunderstorm is coming and the sun still lights up the buildings: the intense contrast of luminescence gives a unique great effect!
It's also amazing taking a visit on evening when the town shows its tourist vocation offering numerous candle lit restaurants, bars and shops.
The town, Messapian in origin, has also many important pieces of architecture and art which is worth visiting. The cattedrale (15th cent.) has a splendid gothic facade and the interior was remodelled in 18th century style. Other resources in our little tourist guide in our web site.
