You are also close to the many restaurants, bars, shops in the old centre. Ostuni is a beautiful centre called “white town” because of the lime used for the typical, Mediterranean houses standing out against a sky of rare beauty. The town is placed over one of the five hills (300 metres above sea level) surrounding Valle D’Itria and spreading until the Murgia area. The town has an air of tranquillity thanks to the kindness of the inhabitants who make this place really hospitable. The historical origins of Ostuni date back to the Messapi who founded the town over one of the highest hills in order to rescue it from enemy attacks. Walking through the small streets of the peculiarly tangled historical centre, you are captured by the perfume and colours of the flowers decorating the walls and the window sills of the typical houses. Thanks to its strategic and central position connecting to the most important places of the Apulia.

The Puglia/Molise region
Apulia is the easternmost region in Italy. The territory, caracterised by the presence of hills and plains, spreads out over large, morphologically different areas: the promontory of Gargano in a northerly direction and the “Tavoliere delle Puglie”, the vastest plateau in the region, located just at the foot of the promontory; the Murgia which stands out in the middle of Apulia, at a short distance from Basilicata; the peninsula of Salento which stretches from the gulf of Taranto up to Lecce.
Each area is caracterised by its own cultural peculiarity represented by different dialects, cookings, landscapes, folklore which are all worth visiting and cannot be appreciate just during a fleeting visit.
GARGANO It is the northernmost part of the region, caracterised by the presence of elevations overlooking the deep blue Adriatic. The most famous places are the beautiful Tremiti islands and small towns such as Vieste, Peschici, Rodi Garganico, Pugnochiuso and Mattinata. Another important tourist attraction is represented by the places of pilgrimage such San Giovanni Rotondo (one of the most important in the world), and Padre Pio’s Sanctuary, Monte Sant’Angelo which is famous for San Michele’s Sanctuary (during the Middle Ages pilgrims and crusaders visited this place before they went on the Crusades) and San Marco in Lamis. Other worth visiting places are the National Park of Gargano and the thick Foresta Umbra.
TAVOLIERE As is suggested by the name, this is a large, completely plain, rich in wheat fields, area spreads over near the Apennines. There’s Foggia, the place Frederick the Swabian designated as the second capital of his reign where he set his court. The ruins of Lucera castle, dating back to Frederick’age, are of great interest; here the emperor favoured the most important Saracen settlement. Worth visiting is the beautiful Romanesque cathedral of Troia which rises on a small elevation near the Preappenines.
MURGIA It is a plateau rising in the heart of Apulia; recognized as wild life park and first rural park in Italy not long ago, it is located between Tavoliere and Salento. Because of the uniqueness of the ecosystem caracterised by the presence of rare species of the maquis and the karstic elements, Murgia is one of the most interesting area in the region. The hilly area is formed by some metres high elevations, while the inland parts are plain and rich in vineyards, olive groves, almond trees and pieces of land surrounded by typical drystone walls and sheep tracks, once used during the transhumance.
There are many places of great interest from a historicoartistic and naturalistic point of view. Castel del Monte, a gothic building dating back to Frederick’s age which is unique; it stands out in Andria territory and is the evidence of the great alchemic, astronomic, typical of the Middle ages culture. On a westerly direction, there’s Minervino, the so called “Murge balcony”, from which you can admire Lucania and the volcano called Vulture. In the inlands, there are interesting centres such as: Altamura, famous for its good bread, the latest archaeological discoveries dating belonging to the dinosaurs age and the “Pulo”, a huge and deep circular crater, produced by Karstism; Ruvo di Puglia with the beautiful Romanesque cathedral and the archaeological museum where the Talos, the famous crater, is kept; Gravina, whose name derives from the suggestive typical, karstic phenomenon represented by a narrow valley shaped by the watercourses which is a very known naturalists’destination . But there are still other places worth visiting where it is possible tasting the excellent traditional dishes.
On the east side, between the so called “Land of Bari” and the “Valle d’Itria”, at a short distance from Salento, there are so many centres of indisputable interest;Trani and the famous cathedral, the very symbol of the Apulian Romanesque; Molfetta whose churches keep some of the beautiful paintings by Giaquinto, Bisceglie and the dolmens; the white town of Ostuni; Cisternino, Conversano, Grottaglie, a famous pottery town; Polignano a mare and the terraces in the old town falling sheer into the sea; Monopoli, Bari and San Nicola’s cathedral; Alberobello with the trulli, small round houses of stone with conical roof , Martina Franca, Locorotondo.
Near Taranto, Massafra and Laterza “gravine” (ravines) are very important, indeed they keep very interesting basilian frescoes: moreover, Laterza, known as the Italian Gran Canion, is currently LIPU seat (Italian association for the protection of birds).
SALENTO Better known as Italy heel, the peninsula of Salento is the easternmost region. This is the perfect place to spend a great holiday, swimming in one of the most crystalline Italian seas, visiting the magnificent Baroque monuments, since Lecce is the capital of the Baroque style. Moreover, this is the area where excellent wines are produced.
Both on the Adriatic and Ionian coast, there are famous seaside resorts with sandy beaches, caves, cliffs and beautiful sea grottoes. The most visited ones are Torre dell’Orso, Laghi Alimini, the beautiful, wild beach Baia dei Turchi, Otranto and the cathedral with the particular tessellated floor, one of the most mysterious monuments of our histoicoartistic heritage, Porto Badisco where Enea landed, Santa Cesarea Terme, Castro and the beautiful grotto of Zinzulusa, il Ciolo and Santa Maria di Leuca. During the route, we advise you to visit Tricase where you can admire the Vallonea, the oldest oak in Europe (the trunk is 1,5 metres large while the foliage spreads over 500 mq ); this tree is really unique attracting tourists from all the world.
On the Ionian side, the most visited places are the white town of Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo, known as “via Montenapoleone of fish market”, because of the stands selling excellent fish and sea fruit, Torre Suda, Torre Vado, Porto Selvaggio, Ugento, Santa Caterina. Moreover you really have to visit the unforgettable beach of Pescoluse, known as the “Maldive” and it’s easy to understand why. Then, going back to north, there’s Taranto, the capital of Grecia Magna with the interesting archaeological museum which keeps one of the most important jewels collection belonging to the that age. There are centres of great interest in the inlands part too such as Giurdignano, small town near Otranto which is famous for the menhirs and San Salvatore’s crypt dating back to the 10th century; the fortified town of Acaya, Galatina and Santa Caterina’s basilica, which is second only to the basilica of San Francesco, in Assisi, for a great deal of frescoes present in the building.
