Trullo | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
Not for everyone!
If driving through tiny dirty roads does not put you off and if fake "picturesque" renovation does put you off, then you might be interested in spending your holiday in this authentic trullo in a peaceful countryside a few kilometers south of Ostuni.
The house consists on two separate buildings facing a communal court. The old stone “cottage” has the typical cone-shaped roof and the modern one, named “lamia”, is furnished with a simple contemporary taste.
It is the ideal place for one or two couple of friends or a family of four.
Built circa 1860, the Trullo "Due Galli" keeps its unaltered classic setting: a large central cone, two smaller side cones in the front and two more cones on the back, resulting in a large oval plan.
The trullo is accessed from a single central door traditionally facing southeast.
In correspondence to each cone there is an "alcove", one of which is used as a bedroom, one as sitting area and another one as a kitchen.
The interior keeps the original flooring in local stone.
The dry stone masonry and the thickness of the wall (in some points 2 mt. thick), provides a pleasant "microclimate" inside, cool in summer and heat-retaining in winter.
A large underground cistern is regularly stocked with fresh water from a local supplier.
In 2006 the property went through renovation works. A new addition was built, the "Lamia", separated from the main body and radically different in its strict lines, designed not to compete with the old building, but to compliment it with carefully planned proportions.
The Lamia, which houses a bedroom and a bathroom, was built in tufa - (local stone) and, like the trullo, is whitewashed with lime milk on the outside and in the interior. The floors are in polished concrete.
We also wanted to create an outdoor space, a sort of courtyard with a central table in stone, surmounted by a large pergola, allowing our guests to enjoy the architectural unit of the place in harmony with the nature that surrounds it.
The courtyard is completed by a handy, discreet open-air kitchen and barbecue.
The property includes an hectare of land with an olive orchard of more than 40 old olive trees, a dozen almonds trees and many other fruit trees (fig, cherry, walnut, prickly pear, pear).
Apulia is the heal of Italy and Alto Salento is the southern part of this peninsula set between the Adriatic and the Jonian coasts.
We are at 17km from the natural maritime reserve of Torre Guaceto and the “white city” of Ostuni. It is a place to enjoy the tranquility of the countryside while being at short drive from pristine beaches and laid-back night-life in the nearby historical villages (S. Vito dei Normanni, Francavilla Fontana, Ceglie Messapica, Ostuni).
Brindisi aiport is 20km away, while Bari's airport is at one hour drive.
