Home description
Enjoy the peace of the country near the White City of Ostuni. You are only 5 min from the city and 15 mins from the beach resort at Pilone. The trullo has two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living area under the three cones. Under the largest cone there is a lounge area with a TV/DVD, a smaller cone with the fireplace and wood stove and a dining area under the third. This dining area also doubles as a very comfortable third sleeping area with a few adjustments to the table and cushions. Much of your dining will be outdoors and so the kitchen adjoins the house but has a separate entrance which opens up onto an shaded terrace where you can eat al fresco close to the BBQ and pizza oven. There are 5000 sq metres of land surrounding the house where you can feel free to stroll or eat the fruit growing there when in season. There are almonds , pears, pomegranite and of course olives.

The Puglia/Molise region
The house is located 4km along and 600m off the main road between the striking towns of Ostuni and Cisternino among beautiful rural rolling hills. You are ideally situated to explore the famous Trulli capital of Alberobello and take in the Limestone caves of Castellana near by. You are also near some great coastal town such as Monopoli and Polignano a Mare and the extensive beaches of Torre Canne or the beach and headland sites at Marina di Ostuni near Monticelli.
Ostuni / Casalini area
The towns and cities are a delight and a great source of local pride. Ostuni and Cisternino are exceptional for their medieval architecture and great views to the sea and across the Valle d’Itria. There is also the baroque spendour of Martina Franca with it’s cathedral of St Martin and it’s Opera Festival running from 21 July to 11 August each year.
There are many beach resorts within a short drive, which are well equipped for small children seen from the S.S 379 called often Tourist Villages. The town of Fasano is not particularly interesting except that it has a great safari park and mini Alton Towers, a bit dated but great for the little ones.
Ostuni will provide you with the perfect opportunity to relax in it’s many cafes restaurants in the old city, some of which are built into the hillside as caves. There is a huge market on Saturday where you can buy almost anything but especially great for fresh fruit and veg and incredible local cheeses, olives and cured hams – you will not go hungry. This region has one of the greatest cuisine in Italy and that is quite a boast. You must try the antipasti, which are a selection (more like a meze in reality) of famous local specialities.
The nearest village is called Casalini and boasts a great eatery which doubles as the village butchers(Maccelleria). All the dishes are local and predominantly meat of course all roasted almost before you eyes and delicious, washed down of course with the local vino della casa- house wine. This village is to the left as you come out of the private road to the house in the direction of the town of Cisternino.
Cisternino is a smaller version of Ostuni and even more low key and relaxing and is 10 minutes away form the house. It has been described as the most beautiful small town in Italy. The town square looks like the set for a production of any Rossini comic opera.
If you wish to explore further then you can visit the national Park of the Gargano to the north taking in the Capital of the Region Bari and Trani. Bari boasts great shopping and a very old historical centre with the two great churches; the Basilica of San Nicola( Santa Claus) and the cathedral itself. In the Gargano you should head for Vieste and Tremiti islands off the coast. If you go south to the tip of Italy taking in Gallipoli and Taranto and the walled city of Otranto you will enter the great wine region of Salento and Manduria. The western side of Puglia on the Gulf of Taranto has endless stretches of sandy beaches and busy resort towns all the way to S. Maria di Lueca on the tip.
Only 50 km south is the big city of Brindisi with it’s large port with many sailings to the Greek mainland, Corfu, Cefalonia, Albania and the Balkans and even Istanbul. The city is worth a look and has much to offer for a day out. You should also take in the beautiful city of Lecce, 90 kms to the south, which is a splendid example of baroque architecture with great churches and squares. As in all southern Italian towns, the passagiata is a must. Around 5pm you will see the whole town come out in their finest and walk up and down the streets eating ice cream, pizza slices and foccacia.
How to get there
The area is well served by flights from the UK. Brindisi is 25 minutes away and Bari an hour from the trullo. Ryanair flies from Stansted to both of these airports. British Airways and Alitalia fly from Heathrow to Bari. Alitalia also fly to Brindisi. Flights exist to Pescara, Napoli and to Rome involving a four hour car journey, but taking in many beautiful sites on the way to Ostuni. Make the journey to the house a part of your holiday eg. the beautiful Amalfi coast or the Gargano. Car Hire is reccommended and any of the usual companies offer a wide range of cars. Hertz seems to offer the best prices and some discounts if you travel with Ryanair.

Brendan,
just a few lines to say how much we enjoyed our holiday in Puglia. You trulli was wonderful and we will be returning to that area of Italy. We will have no hesitation in recommending your house to family and friends.
