Home description

An amazing house full of character which has been recently renovated with no expense spared. With an exposed stone double height “barrel-vaulted” ceiling throughout, large roof terrace and air-conditioning, this residence is a special place to stay. There is a new bathroom and kitchen that have been designed to incorporate the most modern features without detracting from any of the amazing character.

The house has a lounge area with corner kitchen, quality sofa-bed and balcony doors. From the lounge there is a door through to the large double bedroom. There is a large roof terrace where there is another small bedroom / "chill-out" room.

The house is in the old town of Ostuni (Spirito Santo area), literally steps way from the many bars and restaurants surrounding the piazza. Behind the apartment, in the opposite direction to the piazza is the lovely “Villa Communale”, Ostuni’s only park. The “Villa” has been written about in horticulture books around the world, as there is a large selection of trees that are rarely seen at all Europe, let alone all in one place. Next to the famous coffee shop in the Villa is a new children's play area.

There is a huge market held in the new part of Ostuni town (bargains galore !) every Saturday morning and a very interesting antiques market held on the 2nd Sunday of every month around the outside of the Villa.

The lovely Blue-Flag beaches along this coastline are just a few minutes drive away. There is a very helpful English lady who lives nearby who is always on hand with advice and tips on where to go and what to do !

The Puglia/Molise region

Puglia (or Apulia as it is often known to the English) is the Heel of Italy. An area famous for its peaceful, untouched and natural wildlife with villages full of Baroque and Romanic churches and palazzi. Ostuni is often referred to as the Jewel of Puglia and famous nearby neighbours include the medieval Castel del Monte and Alberobello (the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Puglia), Lecce, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Gallipoli. The Grotte di Castellana (Italy’s largest underground cave network – stunning !)
and the fantastic Fasano Safari Zoo are only a short drive away too.

There are several lovely “Blue-Flag” beaches near Ostuni including the lively Pilone 2 and Camerini at Villanova (by the “Il Faro” bar), the relaxed Torre Pozzella stretch and the georgous Torre Guaceto, a WWF protected nature reserve. For those who prefer to hang around in a trendy “Chill Out Bar” and dive from the rocks, there is “Jimmiz Bar” at Gorgonola.

For more fun in the water, there is a swimming pool at the ”American Bar” (follow the road to the mini-roundabout at Villanova Port and turn left) or the water park called “In-Aqua” at Lamaforca beach.

Puglia has some of the finest and best value foods and wines in the country. Wine shops (“Entoteca’s”) and supermarkets are stocked with top quality DOCG wines from around £2 per bottle and an 8-course starter (“antipasti” ) in a top restaurant will cost from around £4 !

Ostuni / Ostuni Centre area

Rough Guide (Italy) ; "one of the most stunning small towns of southern Italy", "a gleaming white splash of sun-bleached streets and cobbled alleyways"

Lonely Planet (Italy) ; "stunning town of stark, whitewashed buildings", "the seemingly disordered tangle of narrow cobblestone streets, many little more than arched stairways between the houses, recalls a North African Arab medina"

Lonely Plant (Puglia & Basilicata) ; “Ostuni has a commanding position, its maze of tightly packed streets twisting around a dramatic 15th century cathedral encircled by medieval ramparts. It is the most popular Murgia town, mainly due to its proximity to the coast. In recent years it has become devilishly chic, and has the best after dark scene in the region”

If you like the idea of getting purposefully lost wandering around the cobbled sundrenched streets of a medieval walled town, stumbling across amazing restaurants (with ridiculously low prices !) and trendy bars, whilst catching glimpses of turquoise sea through the gaps between the beautiful old whitewashed townhouses, then Ostuni is for you !

Guestbook

“We absolutely loved this apartment. We have stayed in Ostuni many times before but have never found a place that is as close to the piazza but still quite at night. ” GP & CP, Wimbledon

“Thankyou for a wonderful 10 days. I came to Ostuni as a recommendation from one of your previous guests, but did not expect it to live up to her claims. It infact exceeds her depiction and I would definitely like to book another 10 days for the same time next year” PF, Cambridge

“Wow. This place has so much character. We have seen this type of beautiful stone “barrel vaulted ceiling” before in this area, but never with such attention to detail on the stonework restoration. Very special !” LH, Brentwood

"Our two sons (aged 10 and 12) absolutely loved the roof-top room. They treated it like their own little house !" JG, Littlehampton
