The Puglia/Molise region
Puglia is something authentic and extremely Italian. It is a land of an unbelievable variety of colours. Here you will find rich red earth, tall dark green pine forests, silvery green olive groves and bright green scattered vineyards; glowing white towns, grey natural Baroque churches and ancient castles and buildings.
The average daytime temperatures in July/August are about 32 degrees and a little less in June and September. With two seas around three sides of the area, the air does not feel too oppressive during the summer months. With sunshine for most of the year and olive groves which stretch along a beautiful coastline, it boasts one of the cleanest seas in Europe. Italians have long made it their favoured holiday destination and now with more cheap flights from the U.K. it is rapidly becoming a hot destination for gourmet travellers who are looking for something different to the more well known holiday destinations. Visit oil and wine making Fattorias , see beautiful Greco-Roman cities and mysterious ancient Trulli. Enjoy wonderful local cuisine and rich strong wines which are becoming known throughout Europe.
Alberobello - Puglia has the unique Trulli, which can be found in abundance in Alberebello. This rural architecture has made the town of Alberobello a UNESCO World Heritage site. Alberobello is at the heart of Trulli land, with over a thousand of these stone cone-roofed buildings in the famous Valle d'Itria.
Around Alberobello the local landscape is of vineyards and olive groves, dry-stone walled fields are characteristic of Alberobello and with its surrounding forests it was given its name, the beautiful tree.
Cisternino - situated in the land of the trulli which is visited every year by many tourists. Cisternino offers a sun-drenched charm and stands on a small hill from where the eye sweeps over both Locorotondo and the Itria valley dotted with white trulli standing amid the green trees and cultivated fields. Cisternino has been awarded the accolade of being one of fifteen of Italy’s most beautiful old towns. Cisternino has something of a reputation as a town of gastronomy with no shortage of restaurants and trattorias, which set their tables out in the narrow whitewashed streets and piazzas. You can stroll in the evening where you will find charming restaurants almost hidden in the pretty narrow walkways.
Ceglie Messapica - a small messapian town with its old town consisting of white little terraced houses and staircases winding into narrow rolling streets. Places to visit: Square Norman-Swabian tower, Church of St. Nicholas with an important sculture of the Madonna and Child, Madonna d'Ibernia Sanctuary.
Ostuni - this is a town where numerous archeological findings have been made. Known as the 'White city' as it glows day and night. The old town offers a spectacle of winding staircases, narrow streets, beautiful arches and natural balconies, with sea views.
Ostuni / Cisternino area
Apulia! One must visit it all: from the mysterious grottoes of the Gargano, through the sunny fields of Cisternino and the pasture of the Western Murgia hills, through olive groves and vineyards, touching the almond, cherry, lemon and fruit trees, and reaching the Salento region embraced by the Adriatic and Ionian seas.
Market Days
Cisternino - Monday
Ceglie Messapica - Saturday
Ostuni - Saturday morning. A fantastic array of goods! 2nd Sunday in the month there is a great antiques market around the old walls in the centre.
Locorotondo - Friday
Emmezeta (Hypermarket) off the the motorway, near Fasano, provides you with an amazing range of food and general goods. Excellent golf courses opened throughout the year including the winter months!
Festivals in the Area
There are many festivals and religious celebrations held in Puglia throughout the year.
Here are just a few:
Alberobello Folk Festival (first weekend in August) Locorotondo and Ceglie Messapica Street Festival (16th August) Ostuni Festival and Procession (26th August) Alberobello Festival (27/28th September)
Alberobello is home to one of the most famous Italian Folk Groups. Every year a Folk Festival is held inviting international folk groups from all over the world to perform.
The festival concludes with a performance by Alberobello’s own group “Gruppo Folkloristico Citta dei Trulli”. The festival is free and is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Trulli panorama.
Locorotondo and Ceglie Messapica Street Festival (16th August) A large festival held in the heart of the historical Locorotndo town centre, with a large firework display over the Itria Valley. It is held in celebration of St. Rocco one of the patron saints of the town.
A similar celebration is held in Ceglie Messapica with lovely lights illuminating Piazza Piebiscito.
Ostuni Festival and Procession (26th August) Festival of St. Oronzo. A procession with horses and traditional costumed riders called the 'Cavalcata' who follow the statue through the small and climbing streets. Live bands, street decorations and markets create a unique town festival.
Alberobello Festival (27/28th September) A celebration in honour of the patron saints Cosma e Damiano. Decorations and lighting throughout the streets, with 24-hour mass, a firework display, live brass bands, street performers and a funfair are just some of the features of this festival. The main feature of this celebration is the procession of the statues of the two saints with broadcasted mass and a large brass band.

Guestbook
Villa Palma is in a great postion, slightly elevated and very convenient for Cisternino and Ostuni. We lost count of the number of beautiful restaurants serving quality Italian food.
We really had a marvellous time and really enjoyed the tranquility of the Villa. We all enjoyed the pool and the terrace facilities, also the local restaurants.
Heaven! We could have stayed forever. Food at less than half that of the UK in some places and much better quality. A gem of a place. If the Italians go there for their holidays then when in Rome ..........
